towing/payload

Hi, i am new to the truck world. We really want to go camping but want to make sure we get the right truck.
I am looking at buying a 2014 sierra 1500 double cab 5.3 L with 3.42 gear ratio.
I want too buy a camper that weighs 6630 lbs dry weight and 7458 lbs loaded with water, gear, food, etc... I think the hitch weight is 845 lbs

passenger weight is 680 lbs

I also want a quad and they vary from 700 lbs to 800 lbs

Is this truck going to work for me or do I need a smaller camper(I did consider a toy hauler but my wife hates them so that's out of the question)
I should also mention that I need the ramps for the quad and generator that i havent calculated the weight for.

Sorry if i am not clear or seem to be a little everywhere. I am new to this and I am out of my depth here.

Thx for anyones input

  • Well the trailer IS half ton compatible but not when you add the weight of the quad. With the ramp and fuel cans you are pushing an extra 1000 pounds or so onto the truck.
  • Forget dry weights, stay with GVW of the unit you're going to tow....Don't know if that specific truck will work that well for you...No way do you need a 1 ton to tow that TT with, but you may want to think about a 3/4 ton truck...IF you want to keep what you have, you may want to consider a lighter weight TT....Look on your drivers door sill and see if you can see what your trucks GVWR is as well as it's RAWR (rear axle weight rating)....but the 5.3 with 3:55 may not be happy loaded with family and loaded trailer...

Others may chime in and be able to help you more.
  • The dealership tells me that the towing is 9600 lbs and the payload is 1974 lbs. But nothing is considering the GVWR and the GCWR and that's the stuff i don't understand. And on the brochure for the trailer say its a 1/2 ton tow able. Can we trust anyone trying to sale us something these days. lol

    Lets do the math:

7500lb trailer will have a hitch weight of around 1000lbs
    passengers 680
    quad 800
    WDH 50
    Total weight is = 2530lbs!!!!

You need at least a 3/4 ton truck with a payload of at least 2600lbs.
  • Check the sticker on the driver's door post. It will tell you what the carrying capacity is. But I doubt you are going to find a 1/2 ton truck with carry capacity of over 2000 pounds which is what your list adds up to. That hitch weight will go up as you store things in the trailer too. If you really want to carry a quad then you may want to look at 3/4 or 1 ton pickups.
  • A half ton will never be able to pull that trailer with a quad in the box of the truck. You're in 3/4 or 1 ton territory. More likely 1 ton.
