Why continue to say forget the marketing badging and use the only true
nomenclature and that is GVWR
Someone posted that Ford has about 15 different 'half ton' offerings in one year
Demographics says the vast majority out there only want 'half ton' pickups and
SUV's. Only tiny percentage want '3/4 ton' and even smaller want '1 ton'
Demographics also says these folks of the 'half ton only' herd love marketing
verbiage...like "max tow", "HD", "heavy duty", "super duty", etc... Then
toss in the component marketing 'king of the hill' verbiage and some actual
but only a component level, not whole truck level. Like brakes so big even
a 3/4 ton would be embarrassed (my words in paraphrasing), etc
My 1980 C10 Silverado is a 'half ton' and also the 'big ten', which is today's
HD or super duper half ton (today's 'half ton' ranges from +6K GVWR to +8K GVWR)
So Marty, you can use the DOT class (I like that), or count the number of lugs,
the size of the pumpkin, the dia of the ring gear, the MTWR (OBTW...derived from
a curb, which few folks know or want to believe that it is a stripper model),
or go by the marketing badging on the side (some times it is also on the rear),
or the height of the cab, or the height of the bed, or the height of the bed side
rails, etc
'Curb' or 'stripper' model...take my 1996 Suburban...listed 'curb'
is either ~5,200 to ~5,600. It weighs in at ~7,200 at the local
garden scales (certified by county weights and measure). In order to
get mine down to 'curb', I'd have to unbolt and remove the big block,
4x4, 2nd/3rd row seats, remove the upgrade options (rugs, insulation,
headliner, center console, etc), power windows, power door locks, power
seats, AC, etc, etc, etc. Even then don't think can do it, as think
they used a manual tranny, which is NOT offered in any model lines
Again, all that matters is the GVWR and now or the DOT class (think too wide
a range within each class for the masses)
Oh well...the majority or the herd that has the marketing demographics bulls-eye
clearly painted on their back side...
