As others said, I think you're in heavy half or 3/4 ton territory. Even if your Tundra could safely tow it, you'd have no margin. I've done 1/2 ton towing near max load and really enjoyed y vacations more once I upgraded to a 3/4 ton truck.

How do you camp?
- Long distance or nearby?
- Many trips, or just a couple of times per year?
- Ever take firewood? (Think you might want to one time?)
- Do ya'll take water? A generator? Kids? Guests? Bicycles?
- Do you take a generator?

Knowing some of this information as well as the other questions that have been asked so far (is the stated weight GVWR? What type of Tundra is it?) will help us give you more valuable insight.

Take advice from the brand loyalists with a grain of salt (fanboys and haters both). Stick with the people who use arithmetic and show their work. :)

Asking before buying was definitely the right way to start! Too many people come on here and ask for help after they've already bought a truck and had a negative first experience. They'll add airbags, leaf springs, put a bike rack on the back of the trailer, shift things around, etc.

Years ago, I bought my first truck used and - a few months later - I went to put a hitch in the receiver and realized it didn't have one! I didn't check for a towing package when I bought it because I'd never heard of a truck not having one before. I had inadvertently bought a "grocery getter". I ended up adding a transmission cooler, heavy duty fan clutch, hitch receiver, 12v wiring, brake controller, etc. to try to turn it into a proper tow vehicle. I was on the verge of changing out the rear end gearing when I just traded it in and got a 3/4 ton.

Having an inadequate tow vehicle can be a terrible feeling.

If that's the gross weight, the Tundra will be OK for the task. If you go with a Tundra, you want the second generation truck with the 5.7 V8 and 6 speed trans with towing package.

Why continue to say forget the marketing badging and use the only true
nomenclature and that is GVWR

Someone posted that Ford has about 15 different 'half ton' offerings in one year

Demographics says the vast majority out there only want 'half ton' pickups and
SUV's. Only tiny percentage want '3/4 ton' and even smaller want '1 ton'

Demographics also says these folks of the 'half ton only' herd love marketing
verbiage...like "max tow", "HD", "heavy duty", "super duty", etc... Then
toss in the component marketing 'king of the hill' verbiage and some actual
but only a component level, not whole truck level. Like brakes so big even
a 3/4 ton would be embarrassed (my words in paraphrasing), etc

My 1980 C10 Silverado is a 'half ton' and also the 'big ten', which is today's
HD or super duper half ton (today's 'half ton' ranges from +6K GVWR to +8K GVWR)


So Marty, you can use the DOT class (I like that), or count the number of lugs,
the size of the pumpkin, the dia of the ring gear, the MTWR (OBTW...derived from
a curb, which few folks know or want to believe that it is a stripper model),
or go by the marketing badging on the side (some times it is also on the rear),
or the height of the cab, or the height of the bed, or the height of the bed side
rails, etc

'Curb' or 'stripper' model...take my 1996 Suburban...listed 'curb'
is either ~5,200 to ~5,600. It weighs in at ~7,200 at the local
garden scales (certified by county weights and measure). In order to
get mine down to 'curb', I'd have to unbolt and remove the big block,
4x4, 2nd/3rd row seats, remove the upgrade options (rugs, insulation,
headliner, center console, etc), power windows, power door locks, power
seats, AC, etc, etc, etc. Even then don't think can do it, as think
they used a manual tranny, which is NOT offered in any model lines

Again, all that matters is the GVWR and now or the DOT class (think too wide
a range within each class for the masses)

Oh well...the majority or the herd that has the marketing demographics bulls-eye
clearly painted on their back side...

The towing capacity of the second generation Toyota Tunda is that of up to 10,000+ p'ounds. The payload capacity is over 2,000 pounds. The second generation of Toyota Tundra has 3 engines to choose from

Actually, if one looks at the federal DOT guidelines for trucks, a class 1 or half ton truck has a gvwr to 6000 lbs, a class 2 or 3/4ton, has two classifications, light duty 6001-8400, heavy duty is 8401-10000 lbs. Class 3 or 1 ton is 10001-13500.

With in these DOT specs, one can find trucks badged with 15, 25 or 35 from a badging standpoint. So what is a 1/2 vs 3/4 vs a 1 ton? your guess is as good as mine! GM has had 1500, 2500 and 3500 models with 8600-10000 gvwr's, from single wheel setups to dually's back in the day. ALL are per the DOT, class 2 or what most would call a 3/4 ton truck. Even tho some rigs with 10K gvwr' had a 3500 badging, what many would consider a 1 ton truck!

Uh, nothing like that for the 2013 model. The MAX capacities for the second generation are 7,000 GVWR, 1,885 payload and 10,400 towing, all for the regular cab 5.7L 4X2 longbed ONLY. Other models are all substantially less in the payload by at least 500 lbs.

Is that claim in something for the 2014? Please provide a link. Thanks.

Sweetgammy, unfortunately the Tundra is still a half-ton truck. I think the point many are trying to make is that like most half tons you will lack payload to haul larger trailers. The heavier the trailer, the more tounge weight, the more it counts against your payload. I have a 2010 Tundra and love it. We pull a 6,000 lb trailer over some pretty steep terrain. It has all the power I could wish for, but with a couple of bikes and firewood I am probably well over my payload capacity. After our trip back from the Smoky Mountains I am putting E-load tires on it this week.
