Trailer came with queen mattress, but not enough support

According to the paperwork we got with the trailer, the full size queen was an upgrade from the short queen. But I don't think they made the support any different for the added length, and there isn't much support anyway.

I made a drawing to illustrate because I don't describe well.

The base frame is 46 inches wide. On the length, at the bottom end of the mattress, the base has 27 inches which is the big compartment accessible by lifting the bed. It has no additional support on the frame, and the 1/2 inch plywood that the bed is on has no additional support.

The 49 inches at the top of the mattress is over the basement, a passthrough type. It has three 2x2 supports at the top (marked in orange).

We replaced the innerspring with a gel/memory foam. One person sleeping on it is comfortable. Two people roll to the middle or at least roll to the same spot.

The mattress hangs off the 1/2 inch plywood on the three sides of the under bed storage part - 5 inches on each side and 4 inches at the end. When someone (dh) sits on the edge of the bed, both the mattress and plywood bend. The mattress sags over the edge of the plywood a little all the time anyway.

Also, the sheet won't stay tucked in which makes it harder to access under the bed.

I thought I read here where someone nailed some 2x2s to the underside of the plywood to add support, but I can't find that now. I thought I would put a frame of 2x2s at the top of the base frame and exchange the 1/2 inch plywood under the bottom for a piece that fully supports the mattress. And then attach 90 degree metal braces to the sides for support. (marked in green)

Is that overkill? Any reason to nail the support to the plywood instead of on the base frame? I'd like to put drawers in that base too would probably need some extra support anyway.

I'm open to any suggestions. We're getting ready for a trip and I'd like to sleep comfortably.

  • You really don't need to crosshatch the 2x2s. In the upper part over the pass through, I would do the 2x2s on 16" or less centers making sure they are well supported on the ends. Where you have seen the supports attached to the plywood lid is so the space is not covered with the wood. If a lip is added so they can be supported on the ends, that would be the way I'd do it. Even if you add doors or drawers, having access from the top would be a good thing. You might also look into replacing the 1/2" with 3/4". It is also best to have the plywood perpendicular to the supports.
    Good luck.

CruiserRV. It's a Fun Finder. And yes, doing the few mods we have done so far, the construction is pitiful.

If you make a larger support for your mattress, will you still be able to walk around the sides of the bed?

And, if so, why not just build a new, right-sized flip-up part with side supports and replace the original section? You could likely use the same hinges.

Front-facing doors on the underbed storage area would be great. Drawers would be even better, imho.

    Good luck.

Yes, we won't be changing anything except adding support inside the existing base and a larger piece of plywood, and yes, using the same hinges.

I'm not sure why others have nailed support pieces to the plywood instead of inside the base. It may be because it is easier, since that could be done outside the trailer. Or maybe there's another reason I'm not aware of.
