My experience was that the on-board engine control dealt with the over-temp by reducing the power. I had the throttle floored, but the power kept going down while the coolant temperature went up, and I had nowhere to pull off. When I finally stopped, there was a strong smell of burning rubber that I think was my transmission.
I really wished I had some advance warning of this whole problem. I have now added a transmission oil cooler and temperature gauge. Now I feel I can stop and know when it's safe to continue once the transmission is cool.
