Transport TC Using Flatbed Trailer

I am purchasing a Lance 830 truck camper and need to transport it. Most of the transporters want to use a flatbed trailer. I know it has been done but have a few concerns:

How to load and unload?
Ride harshness and support? I don't want the camper riding on it's jacks...

Am I over thinking this?

  • I used "U Ship" to transport a TC I bought in eastern South Dakota to Boise. Most of those guys use regular pickups with some type of trailer. The guy who did mine had an enclosed trailer full of art work headed for CA but with an empty pickup. Cost me $900. I couldn't have went myself any cheaper than that.
  • Talk it out with the transporter and the seller. Make sure everyone understands the logistics of the situation.

Who is responsible for arranging equipment to load the camper on the trailer? Who is responsible for arranging equipment to UNload the camper? Do you need to hire a forklift for both ends of the trip, or will the transporter arrange that?

If you are using a transporter who moves TCs regularly, he will be able to answer your questions and tell you what needs to happen. It might be worth the extra to find someone like this rather than just some random hotshotter.

What they depict on "Shipping Wars" on A&E channel (the actual loading and hauling part) isn't far from the truth in my experience. The customer doesn't think any of these things through and the transporter has no clue what he's in for when he gets there. Everyone's woefully unprepared and it becomes a mad scramble to jury-rig some sort of Egyptian pyramid building system to get the thing loaded. Not something you really want to do with a TC.

Personally I would go get the thing myself.
  • G'day there. We bought a TC (2002 Summerwind 911S) in Sacramento and had it freighted all the way down here on a 6x2 constructed platform that spread the load for the fork to pick up, carpeted support for the overhang and was strapped down real nice...no damage from this. The legs were touching the platform but only as stabilizers. 6 weeks at sea and then moved around the port of entry, still no damage, until I got there and we knocked one of the legs lifting it off the platform...my fault. Go ahead, do what your gut says to do, that way you should be happy.

It needs to be supported on the bottom, where it normally rides. If supported correctly, and tied down correctly, there shouldn't be any issues. Folks mount TCs on the front of flatbed trailers all the time and use the rear for a Jeep or other toys. I can't see much of a difference between the TC being mounted on a flatbed trailer or on a flatbed truck.

How is the camper loaded/unloaded? I've heard of people building platforms but I don't see a transporter doing this? Thanks.
