Travel trailer hitch height

Here is a dumb question. Are most larger travel trailer hitch heights higher than 17.5"? I have a Silverado with a WDH that has the extra drop shank on it so no holes towards the top of the shank. The highest the hitch height is in the drop position is 17.5". The lowest the hitch height can be in the rise position is 27" so I have a lot of dead space in the middle. I go to pick up the new travel trailer this Friday but forgot to measure the tongue height. I think I need a different shank but am not sure. I know they would be willing to sell me one but I can buy one online for a lot cheaper. Anyway I am pretty sure I need a different one because our hybrid hitch height was actually 3/4" higher but I didn't worry about it.

The new trailer is a Dutchmen 265BHS with 15" tires. Don't know if that will help.

Thanks
  • Thanks for the replies. I know they can be turned upside down. That's how I got height #2. My shank is an extra drop because that's what I needed for my Trailblazer when we had that. Because it is an extra drop or rise there aren't holes all the way through the riser part of the shank like most. It is a Reese 3215 so you can see what I am talking about.

    Thanks.
  • Height of my hitch is about 22" on my TT & I have a similar shank. Receiver height on the truck is about 16". I have the shank up rather than down. Works fine.
  • I think your are going to need a new shank, I imagine the hitch height on that new Dutchman will be 23" or 24".
  • "in general", it seems to be about 18" for 'most' tongues.

This is my current 'drop hitch' setup.. It's set for an 18" tongue height and I'm on the lowest hole in the 'down' position.

If I had one of those trailers that have a really tall tongue height, I could flip the shank and mount the head a lot higher..
