Thanks for the comments everyone. A few replies:
AYRTIME: May / June is a good time to come in my opinion. You can never guarantee the weather here, but at least you have long hours of daylight due to the latitude and the children are still in school so the destinations are quieter - it is our preferred travel time.
67avion: Gun control is very tight in the UK, especially after the Dunblane school massacre, at which point it was tightened much more. It is possible to own these things, but I think the levels of certification, inspection, personal assessment, storage requirements etc. are very strict. I think they are especially strict on anything fully automatic or with a short enough barrel to be concealed - so I was surprised he was able to also demonstrate an Ingram MAC-10 on fully automatic. But outside of special shows like this, don't expect to see any guns in the UK that aren't in a museum or carried by a law enforcement officer or soldier. What people here are frightened of is the prospect of guns getting out into the currently gun-less population at large (including criminals).
JoeChiOhki: Mmmmm, Cheese :) - I'm trying to be more careful these days with what I eat (not that you'd know it from my trip reports), but there certainly is plenty of cheese to be had in Britain. Cheddar is the big seller, but my favourite is Wensleydale, plus the blue cheeses like Stilton - Sally hates it when I eat blue cheese :R
jtlingo123: New roof is great. It stood up to being thrown around in the Sahara last year, and extremes of temperature. Very pleased with it, which is a relief, because it was a load of work to build.
cewillis: No, just 3 days :) - you know me by now Cal - I've got to pack in as much as I can.
n7bsn: Ha ha - yes, caravans (touring trailers) get a bit of a bad name. Probably because in the summer people find themselves stuck behind them as they are squeezed down the narrow roads heading for some tourist hotspot.
