Weekend getaway report...
Annnnd, first time camping with the camper.
Posted in the photo thread last week after loading up the camper on the dually for the second time. Haven't been to this place in around ten years. Wanted to get away somewhere familiar, and also new.
For clarification, we've used the camper a handful of times, but this is the first time actually camping with it. I got it this winter, and we hadn't been able to camp yet.
Few things of note, and I'll get to the photos. Few of you guys know that I've had a couple of questions lately relating to the refrigerator. It worked great, except for shutting itself off in transit. Checking on it as frequently as I could, it wasn't a huge deal. Just shut it off and turned it on again after a few minutes and it re-lit. This was on propane the whole trip.
Another thing...this is the first time I've used the camper with a brand new battery. This helped immensely. Not only with the refrigerator, but the whole experience of using the camper. Hot water heater, water pump, lights...and the whole trip I never saw the battery drop below the full indicator light. Didn't even need to bring a generator for a weekend trip.
Truck handled it great through the Tahoe national forest and highway 80. At first I was disappointed with the fuel mileage, but after thinking about it realized that it's basically one huge tank split into two. Basically, a half a tank used is really only a quarter of a tank on a vehicle with only one tank. Not too bad. Plus, we went around two and a half times farther than our "normal" camping spots. Figured it was around 10.5-11.5 mpg average. This was pulling grades at 65-70 with no downshifting. Can't beat that much. Gets questionable when I realize a normal trip would take a half of a normal tank to get there and back, and this one took a tank and a half.
Now onto the fun stuff. Lake Davis...
Unfortunately we got there at 12:30 in the morning and the campground we expected to be open for the season wasn't. So we stayed at a place for the night and payed in the morning. Spent the next first half of the day in a day use area cooking breakfast and seeing if the fish were biting at all. Then took a walk. Talked to the camp hosts and found out the problem. They told us that a three mile drive up the road would've lead us to a camp ground that was open all year. Didn't really have lake access though.
Fun time all in all. Very worth it for a relaxing weekend. Long drive, but worth it.
Best part, free dump station for campers on the way out. Excited to go back for a few day long trip once the official season starts, it gets warmer, and everything opens up. Maybe bring the boat along and see what's out in the middle of the lake to catch.
