Trip up coast--NorCal, Oregon, Washington

I need ideas and suggestions for a 3 week trip I'm planning for my family, two adults and two kids, up the West coast this summer starting from the Sacramento area. We'll be in a 30' travel trailer. Specifically, I'm looking for route, campground, and site seeing/activity suggestions.

We definitely want to see the Humboldt Redwoods and will probably make that our first stop, but I am looking for ideas for the rest of the trip.

We prefer state park / national park camping to "resort" style....but we also expect to spend time at more developed campsites to explore some of the larger cities.

We have some time, so we could even venture into Canada (though I haven't looked at any issues wrt taking an RV across the border).

Any input would be great!

  • IMHO from Sac head north on I5 and ar Weed take US 97 north. Beautiful drive and lots to see and do along the way. Either at the Columbia river or maybe a bit farther north head west pickingnup US101 at or near Astoria. The coast is best seen driving south. Fort Stevens is a great first stop with lots to see if you like history. Tillamook, Netarts Bay, dune buggies at Sand Lake, and dozensmof other places to stop. Redwoods back in CA and pick up 20 from Eureka back to I5 and home.
  • In the Humboldt redwoods area, not too many of the public campgrounds will handle your length. May Need to look into private RV parks for that first leg of your journey.
  • Make reservations early. We live in WA but have always had better luck getting the reservations we wanted by going to the OR coast. WA parks book up for the weekends fast.
  • In Oregon Harris Beach and Cape Lookout State Parks are real nice. Check out the Tillamook cheese factory and the air museum. Well worth the stop.
  • Oregon camp grounds on the Oregon coast are real nice but they have bushes on the sides of the spaces that can make it hard to open your slides. if you can, get a space without shrubs. I just made reservations in Eastern Oregon CG and that is what I did. I made reservations once and tried to back into the site and tore off my bug shield on the truck. Ranger thanked me for taking out the bushes, he said he was thinking of doing it later in the year but today was fine with him. Joe the ranger is a nice guy. he always stops by to chat when we camp there.
