Truck camper overhang and spare tires

The op`s thinking ahead , that's the first step . Last thing you want is to have to get the spare out and have no easy way to do it , without unloading the camper , also might want to think about how your going to lift the truck , stock jack is probably not a good choice with the camper on, I carry a bottle jack , also two jack stands ,I also use to support the front of the camper when I unload at a camp spot
My truck the spare tire winch couldn`t be clocked to access it at the rear wheel so I made this to lower the spare

....but seriously: what if AAA can't supply a flat-bed to haul your rig; what happens if the flatbed + rig height is way too out of DOT to pass under bridges (ie. your spare is not accessable); what if a traditional tow-truck shows up, and you have a rear flat; what if your spare tire winch freezes (rusted); God forbid, what if your spare air pressure hasn't been checked in 5 years, and the tire had 25 LBS in it...etc, etc, etc, etc

Don't get ahead of yourself here. For all you know there won't be any issues. There is no sense in getting all worked up and making changes to a new truck before you know what you actually need.

As others have recommended: Tailgate OFF. The camper will almost certainly interfere with the tailgate cables anyway, preventing you from having on there at the same time as the camper.

Under no circumstances would I use the tailgate to support a TC. Considering the rocks and such that typically bounce up from the rear tires, I would not leave the tailgate down wsith a TC.

The best way to deal with the spare in my opinion, is to have very good tires. That lessens the probability of having a flat. Personally, I have a 30-ton bottle jack in my truck. I would only jack the axle up below the springs, with a load on the truck.

On my TC, I have a Stable Lift. That would require me to pull the truck about a foot forward to change the rear driver side tire/wheel. I can not lower the spare due to TC hanging down in rear, so I would have to do that anyway.

I have had a flat one time in the past 15 years, since I left the construction industry.

I just one length of the "unwinder extension?" with a 13mm wrench. It takes very little force to move the spare on my truck so this works just fine.

One of the 8' campers I was looking at indicated it needed the tailgate on for a s/b, but I wasn't keen on that solution anyway.

I would avoid that camper as it is relying on the tailgate to provide support. Tailgates are not designed to be load bearing.
