I am a mechanic at a used car lot. We are a small 2 man operation. The owner/salesman, and me. To make it easier when he is on vacations and stuff I went out and got my salesmans license.. Well every once in a while I will find myself on the lot when someone pulls in so I have to turn on salesman mode.
You would not beleive the stupidity that comes out of peoples mouths when they are not informed of what they are looking at. My two favorite questioned I get asked are.
1. What does this get for gas mileage?
Hmmmm....let me see here for a minute. My response is always the same. " Do you want me to stand here and blow smoke up your ass and tell you it gets 35 MPG, or would you rather I tell you I have driven this car a total of 3 miles and can not judge the actuall gas mileage from that test drive". This response has actually sold more cars than just lieing about the mileage. People trust me for it.
2. Whats the story on this truck?
well.... Do you want nonfiction, science fiction, or just plain old fiction. The story I have is some guy traded it in the other day cause he wanted a little **** box for his daughter to take off to college. We washed it and changed the oil. Now it sits out there with a sticker in the window. Would you like to continue the tale?
I'm not a real salesman. I refuse to blow smoke up someones ass. I leave that for the boss. He couldnt tell the truth to save his life. He even tries to cover lies with more of the same when you catch him.
