Just a lot of speculation but interesting none the less. As a future (3+ years) SD buyer to replace my 2009 it is something I will continue to watch for.

No doubt it is just speculation as of date. It has been confirmed that the 6.2L will be replaced in the next 4 years by Reuters in an article about the new engine plants labor deal. If this 4.8L is an iron block or CGI and turbocharged, then it is definitely a viable option and just about the right size to handily outperform the 6.2L in the SD. Or any other 3/4 or 1 ton gas engine for that matter.

Chevy is reportedly doing the very same thing.But everyone is behind Ford. Heck the new 3.5L Eco Gen2 motor paired with the new 10-speed are years ahead of everyone.

With an engine that small about the only way to make 400+ HP is to wind it to the moon or put some type of supercharger it.It has been proven time and time again on this board that people don't like to wind their engines to the moon; or even to the sky for that matter. :BMy "guess" is they are going to slap a small turbo on it and call it good. (or they are not even going to put this engine in the SD)

skullebutt from 'inside' the plant is the 4.8 is not happening ,they are just going to direct inject the 5.0 and call it good .
Or just rename the 5.0 4.8 without the crank or rod change ,who knows for sure .

So why isn't the 3.5 turbo the base engine for the 3/4 & 1 ton trucks?

It's certainly got the power. I wonder if the 10,000lb tow rating for the 1/2 ton are assuming almost no one will do it but once you jump up to the bigger trucks, you will get people pushing those limits.

For low end torque you just can't beat a powerful electric motor.

There actually is one in my size range but unfortunately it's not in my price range: Volvo XC90 T8.

Two words, duty cycle. The 3.5 Ecoboost in the Transit Van is significantly derated because of the higher GVWR. An F250/350 with a GCWR of only 13,000 pounds (like the Ecoboost in the Transit) would not be very competitive. I could see an Ecoboost being used in the SuperDuty, but like the OP speculates I think it would be a V8 of 4.5-5 liters with a power output similar to the current 6.2 and more low-end torque, much like the comparison between the current 3.5 Eco and the 5.0 Coyote.

Customer feedback, perceived or real.

Those customers lean heavy toward diesel and aren't about to buy a "little" turbo V6 petrol engine.

Of course, if Ford ever gets a 9/10 speed with the torque capability of the 6R140, then they might rethink that !

The 7.0 caught everyone inside by surprise , it must be going into the annex (V10) building.

For what its worth, I've been totally happy with my 6.2 in my '13 F350 I use for my landscaping business. 67,000 miles so far and she's been perfect.

For pulling equipment trailers around town, its hard to beat.
