OP again. Went to the dealer to see what the latest update is. FCA decided an entire new head with valves, springs, etc. is warranted in this case. A new head is on the way. I saw for myself the nicks in two exhaust valves. (1 and 7) The tech said it looked like it may have been dropped on something during assembly. I guess this also bent the valves slightly. FCA wants this head back to see if they can find the source of the damage and attempt to keep it from happening again.
I do have a case started with FCA customer care and they know of the problem and have been in contact with the service writer. The sales manager also told me to be VERY persistent with them as this is the way to make things happen. Firm but nice. No need to rail on someone that has nothing to do with the problem and I agree with this approach.
mkirsch, as much as it pains me to admit it, I believe you’re right. Diagnose in steps. Why would anyone go straight to something so serious? Rule out the easy things first. They did do leak tests and compression tests and nothing showed up.
The service manager and quite a few other people in the dealership are aware of this issue and I know they want to get it resolved correctly to keep a customer satisfied.
Hard to believe that the head was dropped during assembly, I would want a new motor with just 500 miles on the odometer.
