Amazing.....
In today’s world of ISO-9000, science in engineering...in materials...in production processes...in quality ability (both QA and QC) via the marvelous inspection instrumentation, etc, etc, etc...amazing but it happened to this unlucky OP...a Mr Murphy moment crossed that ICE’s life
Also lost is the ability of the OEM to diagnose what the heck happened via imcompetence of the whole process
Now that they have torn portions of the ICE apart...lost are any of the taletail evidence for forensics to solve & improve the OEM’s process(s) down to delivery to their customer
If me...I’d not settle for anything short of a new engine...and push for a new vehicle...
ISO-9000 is a joke! Just a way for a bunch of people to make a ton of money certifying plants, nothing more. We have sorts for vendor scrap everyday! These are all ISO-9000 vendors that certify their parts meet the blue print specs but yet they don't.
Not sure I agree with this "
Also lost is the ability of the OEM to diagnose what the heck happened via imcompetence of the whole process", I know that anytime a component fails it is examined to find the root cause of the failure. If a converter fails for example, it is cut apart and the failed component is examined to find out why. We hold PPAP parts for years that are used to help find the root cause of a failure. Heck I have seen parts dating back to 1972 for crying out loud. But 90% of the issues will be traced back to an outside vendor.
We have a major sort going on right now for mounting lugs not tapped through. These are made from a vendor out of Country! There are over 1600 converters being sorted for this. It was found at an assembly plant when the bolt would not tighten down! Can you say S-hit storm! So now every lug has to be hand checked to verify they are tapped all the way through before they are welded onto the converter. Once a bad lug is welded in place it is almost impossible to retap the lug as there is only .0625 clearance on the bottom of the lug to the converter. They are trying bottom taps but they are not working. This is going to cost our plant hundreds of thousands of dollars in back charges that may or may not be back charged to the vendor.
I have said this a hundred times, there are hundreds of thousands of parts that make up a vehicle and at anytime a part can fail. Most of the time it is only a minor inconvenience but sometimes it can be a major inconvenience and sometimes it can cost lives if the wrong part/parts fail. With the advent of outsourcing and just in time shipments along with letting suppliers certify their own parts without any incoming inspection and this will continue no mater the product.
