I had a fridge rebuilt a number of years ago. They told me that they had done experiments with cooling units running out of level to see how fast and how bad they failed. They would cut them up and examine the results.
They said damage was evident within 15 minutes.
The cooling unit I destroyed had been left on accidentally at an angle.
When I realized it about 2 or 3 hours later, it was toast.
