Upgrading to LT 16' tires from 15" is this alright?

Rims...load rating 3200 http://alliedwheel.com/wheel.php?name=Series+850+Trailer

Tires...Michelin XPS Rib LT225/75R16, Load range E, max load 2680
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Michelin&tireModel=XPS+Rib&partnum=275R6XPSR&GCID=C13674x012-tire&KEYWORD=tires.jsp_Michelin_XPS_Rib_Tire&code=yes&srccode=cii_17588969&cpncode=42-7550973-2

with metal valve stems.

Trailer gross dry weight 6,900(oem numbers) so probably real life (loaded) gross loaded number might be closer to 9,670 (tanks full, 127 gallon in tanks and 1,500 of personal stuff). Tongue weight (oem) is 750.

Trying to leave as much room between my gross weight I'll be carrying and max weight that I should not go over.

Any other choices you would recommend?

I can't seem to a find cheaper tire that many people have had good service with.

I had 16" LT commercial T/A's on my last TT.
They worked well however they are not the same quality as the steel carcass Michelin ribs or Duravis.
T/A's are cheaper and a decent product but not the same quality as the steel carcass tires

I have 16" LT T/A's on the TT now and can vouch for the fact that they are an excellent tire :B:B

Be sure you have enough clearance ABOVE the tires, not just between them. You need at least 2-1/2" above the tires to allow for suspension travel.

I wound up installing the Rieco-Tital Correct Track II alignment system mainly because it provides 2" of suspension lift when installed. I also had to swap out my Hensley stinger with a 2" rise to one with a 4" rise to compensate for the higher suspension.

I highly recommend swapping out to LT tires, but just giving you a heads up on possible clearance issues I didn't foresee.
  • I did the upgrade a few years ago and installed XPS Ribs which was a really good decision.

I put BF Goodrich Commercial TA's 225x75 R16E on my 5er and love them, good tire not as expensive as Michelin and good enough for me. Just make sure you have enough room for the larger diameter tire if going there from 15" tires. :)

  • The commercial grade all steel ply carcass LT225/75-16 E Ribs would be a preferred upgrade.

Another commercial grade all steel ply carcass tire is the Bridgestone Duravis R-250 at less cost than the very expensive XPS Rib tire. Check them out.

I'm around 47k miles on the 2nd set of BFG Commercial T/A LT215/85-16 E. Ran the 1st set for over 55k miles. Zero issues with either set.

    Other popular poly carcass tires used on heavier trailers are ;

    Goodyear Wrangler HT
    Cooper HT3
    Firestone Transforce HT
    BFG Commercial T/A 2
  • I have had my 16" XPS Ribs for 6 uneventful years now! I can recommend them highly.
