Until there is a measurable improvement in engine longevity or performance, John is right. Has anyone here ever lost an engine because they weren't using amsoil or any brand of synthetic oil? I use Mobil-1 because of the very slight chance of higher bearing temps while towing in Florida's summer heat. In reality, it's probably a waste of money and John is right.
I tow heavy, so I use the best oil/gearlube/filters and so on I can find. I keep my rigs usually 300K and in my opinion it is worth the extra money. If I were to trade rigs every few years I would run the cheapest of everything and not worry about it.
There are engines out there with a million+ miles on nothing but dino 15w-40. I am not telling you what to buy or how to spend your money, but your engine would likely get just as many miles on plain old rotella.
I did the KDP on my Dad's 94 Cummins 12V at 125K and the engine was spotless. I bought my 98 12V with 50K and delo 15-40 was used up to that point. I changed to AMZ/OIL at 50K and at 100K I did the KDP and inside the timing cover it was streaked with black. So just that comparison says a lot. My Dad was doing 20K oil changes with bi pass filter.
At 380K my oil is dark not black with 5K on the oil on the 98. I have Blackstone analyses at 10 and they said to go 13 K. That is with just a Stratapore Fleetguard filter.
My ring and pinion meshing surfaces looked new at 300K.
On my 11 HO my TBN at 7,500 miles has ranged from 3.8 to 4.7 and they said I could go longer If I choose to. Universal averages are 1.
Like I have said on other posts I buy the best of everything I can and that has served me well over the years.
At least we all have options. If some don't like what I buy they can keep it to them selves. Not you BeerCan.
