What's wrong with an articulated tow truck, especially in hilly country? :B

With a tow truck ,what about all the weight on the rear axel? Would there be extra, or the same distribution front and rear as on the ground? Pus for those with 4x4 theres additional issues with a tow.

Make sure you go across the scales with the tow truck and get weighed first. Also check the sticker on the door of the tow truck to make sure the tow truck isnt overloading the rear axle.

Flatbed tow truck...

Putting your truck and hardside camper on a rollback will likely put your total height over 13' 6". You'd have to be very careful about going under any bridges, wires, trees, etc.

I've had to be towed twice in the last 25 years or so, and both times used a wheel lift on the front axle.

nycsteve, I don't think you need to be concerned about putting too much weight on the rear axle during the tow, as they don't lift it that high. If you have a TC that is longer than the truck bed, you need to make sure you don't lift the front so high that you risk dragging the camper jacks or bumper on the ground.

The last time I was towed was 4-5 years ago in my '95 F350 when the clutch throwout bearing disintegrated about 20 miles East of Amarillo. There were several bridges between us and the tranny shop I was being towed to. Fortunately, the rollback that came to get us also had a wheel lift.

Actually a 4x4 is easier to tow...you can select neutral using the differential switch.

We can't be fooled anymore, we now all know that tow trucks like that can only tow truck campers like this. ;)

If your truck does not have a true neutral in the transfer case, you need the rear driveline disconnected. Unless they bring a low-boy, a roll back will not be able handle the height of your TC and you need one that has a strong enough cradle to lift and pull the front end.
