I agree with just about everything posted here. You will likely not have a catastrophic failure. You will likely get to your destination just fine. You will likely be upset that you have too much trailer and not enough truck, especially in the mountains. Your gas mileage will be downright bad. You will likely decide to upgrade your truck very shortly.
Can you do it...? Probably, though I don't recommend it.
Will you be MUCH happier with a heavier truck? Yes.
Do you need a diesel? No, though you will have more power for the hills and better mileage.
Whatever you decide, I hope you enjoy your truck and camper and have a great time with the family!
