What is your opinion of Good Sam Extended Service plan

With only a 1 year warranty on most components of my new 2014 Keystone Bullet 285RLS Ultralite, I just purchased an extended warranty insurance plan from Good Sam since my 1 yr warranty is expiring this week on my TT.. Their marketing makes it sound like a good deal considering all the major appliances and systems it covers compared to the high cost of replacing. I chose a 300 deductible which is less than $250 a year premium but figured anything that fails will be a $1000 + repair bill. What have been experiences been out there with this plan? Is it worth it? I felt there are a lot of things that can malfunction and the cost might be worth it. Even though TT is only 1 year old and has had no malfunctions, I feared that things could start to happen next year...and better to be safe than sorry. What do all you experienced TT owners think of that plan?

  • As long as you read and understood the fine print and didn't buy based solely on the marketing/salesman gibberish, and fully understand what is/is not covered under the policy, then you should be happy with it. It is an insurance policy after all. IMO, appliances are going to be the last thing that break.
  • I was gonna purchase the same plan a while back, it sounded pretty good. But then I started doing some research and the expenses people had even with having the plan, I decided against it. Like was stated in an earlier post, put the money aside IN CASE you do have a major repair. You'll be ahead of the game that way.
  • Most major appliances have longer component warranties.
Most defects will show in the first year.

For a new RV that has basically performed well, I would skip the service plan.
For a used RV, have the seller buy it for you.
  • Look at the loopholes and deductibles.
Insurance companies are not ones in business to lose money, they are betting that most will go well,
    And they do.
    We scoff at extended warranties.
  • I've never had it but I have numerous friends who have that think it's well worth it. One friend lost a fridge and it was about $1200.00 for the fridge, plus labor. He was very happy to pay the deductible. Another lost his AC.

One thing to remember is that your fridge and AC have 2 yr warranties from their manufacturer, so Good Sam will not pay until those expire.

I lost a fridge after 5 yrs, caught it on sale and installed it myself for $999.00. I figure at ($250 per yr x 3, deducting the 2yr manufacturing warranty plus the $300 deductible}, I about broke even.

One thing for sure on an RV is you will eventually need it. It's like any insurance, you hate to pay it, but sure are happy when you need it and it takes care of you. I toss it around lately now that my rig is well out of warranty.
  • Bottom line is if it makes you sleep better at night than it is a great deal. I always figured I could fix what ever breaks and so far so good...
  • Its insurance but in 30 plus years of owning vehicles and campers I have NEVER had an extended warranty pay off....... better off putting the $ away.......
  • Can cancel with full refund within 60 days... Didn't know of this site until 4 days ago....
