- trail-explorerExplorerwood and carpet are bad to use a simply an anti skid device, but many wood platforms have been built in order to gain clearance at the bed rails or cabover when fitting an older camper to a new truck.

any ideal thickness?
Yep...3/8"
That is the thickness of my DeeZee rubber bed mat. I placed it on top of my LineX spray in liner. Have never had a problem with the camper shifting on rough 4wd roads. Highly recommend.

1st, the cheapest or least expensive should NOT be a priority in making your decision. The primary reason for anything between the truck bed and the bottom of the camper is to protect both and to minimize vibration movement between the two which will over time cause wear. IMO.
2. Rubber truck bed mats sized for your truck are readily available and over the life span of truck, pad and camper very reasonable, again IMO.
3. Rubber provides great shock and vibration protection.
In my own experience (for what it's worth), I've had a rubber mat that was labeled for my brand truck and bed size. Fits great and has lasted for 9.5 years without showing signs of wear or deterioration. The same for the bed and bottom of the camper.
BTW: Free advice is worth what you pay for it! But it can be valuable in avoiding regret. Just sayin. Best of luck with what ever you choose.

- tonymullExplorerPeople use a piece of plywood and I guess that works. Foam is way cheaper than rubber. either the jigsaw type or I got a solid 4X8 exercise mat at Walmart, both work just fine and are far less hassle than rubber.

Yes to keep the camper from shifting around in the bed.
Yeah that's why I was thinking rubber as well, the last time I put it in I had nothing in between & thought maybe I should? - tonymullExplorerYes to keep the camper from shifting around in the bed.
