Where can I find GCWR?

I'm an RV wanna be at the moment ( my first post), the only trailer I've towed or owned was a horse trailer 25 years ago. So I'm definitely a greenhorn to RVing though not to camping. I'm trying to do the proper research and make sure my tow vehicle (V6 Grand Cherokee) can really tow the trailer I have in mind (Lance 1685). I've found the vehicle's GVWR (6500 lbs), it's CCC (1020 lbs), the tow rating (6200 lbs), the tongue weight limit (620 lbs), the GAWR (3200 front, 3700 back), the frontal rating (55 sq. ft.) but can't find anything anywhere that tells me the combined weight rating. The Lance trailer appears to be within the vehicle's capability on all the other figures, but I'd like to be sure. I've looked at the data plates on the car and the owners manual, but I can't find it in either.

What am I missing?
  • Plate should be in the frame of the driver's door.
It is the actual capacity of your vehicle with what ever options and equipment was installed at the factory.
  • There are people pulling larger RVs with their JGC, but with the V8 Hemi and the EcoDiesel. I would just make sure to have maintenance done when needed. Maybe upgrade to a beefier tire, also, if one is available.
  • Thanks for the quick replies! I have a 2015 Grand Chrokee Limited 4x4 with the V6. The 1685 is the largest trailer I'm considering, the smaller Lance is on my list though I haven't seen it yet. I'm also considering the R Pods too. There's just me but I'm hoping to do some long road trips next year when I retire so the extra room in the 1685 would be nice. I've ruled out the Aliner, though it was high on my list last year.

I'm going to the Pomona show tomorrow and plan on looking at weight distribution and anti sway hitches, I assume a vendor will be there displaying them. I have no idea what they look like or how they actually work, just the theoretical reasons why they are required for this combination.

I will always be towing up or down mountain grades, specifically the Grapevine. Since I won't be alone if I can't maintain 55 mph, I'm not concerned if I have to go slower. But how much stress will I be putting on the Cherokee?
  • First off WELCOME to forum and to RVng!!!

    Just a few things.

Max Tow Rating.....that is a mfg. marketing magical number based on a stripped down model with a 150# driver and 20# cargo.
Real World.....you will run out of 'payload' (Cargo carrying capacity CCC) long before reaching that magical max tow number.

Your Cherokee has a GVWR of 6500# (Max that vehicle can weigh full of passengers, fuel, stuff, hitch & tongue weight)
Payload (CCC) is only 1020# ===== that is amount you can carry in vehicle. Gets ate up quickly.

Load up the Cherokee for camping (You/ALL passengers/stuff--bags-backpacks/fuel etc), go to a CAT Scales and get weighed.
This will give you Front Axle weight, Rear Axle Weight and Total Weight.

With those numbers you can figure how much real world weight you can tow.
Cherokee Total weight subtracted from GVWR
F/R Axle weights subtracted from Axle Weight Ratings.

That Lance 1685 has a GVWR of 5500# so a possible tongue weight of 660# (12%)
That would be IF fulled loaded to GVWR.
Depending on Cherokee Actual weight numbers the Lance could very well match up.

    Go get weighed! :B
  • I wouldn't worry. As long as you're below all the others, you should be below the GCVWR. I can't find it either.
The Pentastar should do the job. But, you will be on the edge of the towing capability...Especially the tongue weight and the frontal area, but the lance does have a nice curve to the nose that should help.
I wouldn't cheap out on a weight distribution hitch. Get a good one, like the Equal-i-zer 4P or the Reese Dual Cam.
  • Welcome to the forum! I know on my past and present vehicles, the GCWR was listed in the owner's manual. If you list the specific model of Cherokee you have along with the year, we might be able to help you research it.
