I bet there are more people boondock in wal mart shopping centers than the mountains
That is perfectly all right with me. That means the woods are emptier.
We have a few favorite places. One is just tucked inside the treeline at the edge of a large meadow with a meandering trout stream. Another is shaded lake front. We have yet to see anyone else at either one of those spots. - TucsonJimExplorer IICan't tell ya, it's a secret. But my favorite place is somewhere south of Alpine Arizona in the national forest. 9,000 feet of elevation and cool even in the middle of summer.

Happy Boondocking :)
Usually I see "the act of camping with no hookups" called dry camping. Dry camping in an area that is not an organized campground is called boondocking. But we can define them however we want, I guess. :) - BillB800siExplorerKeep in mid folks if you are too far off the main road your Road Service will NOT tow you out. You're on your own and it could get expensive.
Happy trails, - profdant139Explorer IIThe national forests out west generally let you boondock almost anywhere, as long as you are more than a mile or so from an established campground. And yes, with a properly equipped trailer, and some patience, and some careful scouting, and a good tow vehicle, and a topo map, and some helpful hints from a friendly ranger, and some luck, you can take your trailer into some of the darndest places. Not quite as versatile as a truck camper, but a little more comfortable.
- korbeExplorerWe bought some property, and we boondock there every summer.
- camper19709ExplorerWell....... I am not going to tell you my spots either. And , please when you find a spot DO NOT park next to or close to anyone that is already there. I would say that the BLM land in the southwest is the first area thought of when you say boondocking. Your only limitation would be road conditions and can you get turned around once you find your spot.
Although boondocking does not just mean camping in the middle of nowhere. Boondocking is actually just the act of camping with no hookups.
Happy Boondocking :) - amandasgrammaExplorerI like areas in western Az....:) so far....gotta go check the rest out.
- 2oldmanExplorer IISouthern California and Western Arizona are pretty great places.
