Where to attach the Breakaway Cable

Where is the best place (appropriate/correct) place to attach the breakaway cable? I don't know why, but this is like an internet mystery and I cannot find simple instructions anywhere.

My cable is the kind with the eye-loop. I have never found an obvious place on the truck to place the loop. They say dont put it on the holes where the chains go, or in the chain hooks, yet that is really the only place I can see. I must be missing something here.

  • Thanks guys. I have thought about almost all of these options.

I thought about this, but doesnt it leave the cable kind of unsecure? I feel like I need to see a picture :) I'm a visual learner!!

Bucky Badger: your solution is where I think I am headed. I just need to locate a spot to place the shackle. I suppose the holes where the chain hooks are is large enough to accommodate the hook and a shackle?
  • I loop it around the truck hitch next to the 2 inch receiver.. and use the above photo carabineer to attack to itself.

so it has lots of slack
  • Let us also, recognize that having a small cable with too much slack that will unexpectedly actuate trailer brakes if pulled is not something that should be dangling around waiting to catch on anything that may hook onto the hanging loop.
  • I have also thought about this. I am guessing if the break away cable is connected to hitch pin hole and the entire hitch fell off it wouldn't operate. Or if the hitch pin hole broke out of the hitch it wouldn't operate. However, if the safety police wanted us to connect that cable to the frame of the tow vehicle seems like hitch manufacturers would not only tell us where to hook it but furnish enough cable to hook it to the frame. :B In the mean time while I am waiting for the manufactures to be specific i.e. furnish longer cables I weave it through the chain and use a separate connector and hook it to the safety chain hole. I use the separate because it seems like that chain hook could break.

I attach it separately from the hitch. On my X it goes to the bumper chain hanger. On my old conv. Van I installed an eye hook into the rear body panel. If for some reason the hitch separates from the truck the breakaway will still actuate.

  • When towing a TT I placed it over the hitch ball or over the friction sway control ball. On my fiver I put it under the hitch lock pin
