Is the DEF in the truck stop tanks API rated and ISO rated?
Well I would think yes as they sell the Peak Blue DEF in box just like Wally World. I called the J at I-280 and I80/90 and was told by the Manager on duty that she thinks the same company that supplies their boxed supplies thier bulk DEF and that is Peak. She asked my to call back after 8AM when the GM is in and she could tell me for sure or at least get me in touch with someone that could.
Bottom line is, if you are that worried about it, then you should only be buying DEF from the manufacture's dealer network that built your vehicle!!!!! That way if you have a problem it is their problem not yours!!!

- JoeTampaExplorerChevy says:
"Maintaining Def Quality
The quality of DEF in the tank must be maintained for the vehicle to run correctly. Care should be taken to prevent any contaminants from getting into the uid. Only GM-approved DEF, or DEF fluid containing the API certifed or ISO 22241 label, should be used."

Dumb question guys.... I have only used DEF from jugs. When buying DEF at the pump how do you know when the tank is full before it overflows? Is there a handle on it like a fuel pump that automatically stops?
It's just a mini me of a regular pump handle. It clicks off the same. I have now filled at Loves and Pilot and both nozzles were clean LOOKING.
Just a FYI towing at 75mph in head cross winds 32,500# combined I got 225 or so miles per gallon use of DEF.
What MPG were you getting of diesel?
Unless it was around 2-3, there is something wrong.
DEF usage is pretty much dependant on fuel usage. The more diesel you use, the more DEF you use. - Michelle_SExplorer IIISeems to be a common question from any brand Dealer if you bring in your Diesel with a DEF issue, "What brand DEF are you using?" If your answer is something other than the Brand they sell you get the "Ah, bad DEF, you should only use our brand."
Yea, right. I bought one gallon of DEF from the Dealer when my Chevy was new, $15.00 for a gallon. Since I've used just about all the brands out there including Walmart and bulk at Pilot/Flying J. Only problems I've had was with the bad Nox sensors that GM put in the early DEF Diesels. Since both have been replaced I haven't had any further issues. - Cummins12V98Explorer III

After being concerned about using DEF at the pumps I have no issues with doing so now. Saves me from walking into Walmart! - garysolExplorerDumb question guys.... I have only used DEF from jugs. Please do post some facts about "Again it's some dealer service departments(specifically RAM) making warranty denials based on "bad DEF" diagnosis that has some concerned." because I haven't seen any one posting this. Ford on the other hand has been doing it but I have not heard of Ram or GM doing it. At least not wide spreed anyway.
Don
For starters:
From Cumminsforum.com:
"My truck is back at the dealer with SCR problems once again.
Service guy just told me they have to replace the SCR filter and flush the DEF system due to me using other DEF fluid than MOPAR DEF fluid, they said I have to pay for the flush since is my fault for not using their DEF fluid.
Of course I told him to give me an official RAM writing that says that."
"Took to dealer on Saturday. Diagnosed as bad DEF leveling sensor. Apparently they had to replace the whole DEF pump. Didn't have it in stock...and was told on Tuesday that it is a back ordered part but they were able to find one at another dealer. Installed it this afternoon and I'm ready to roll.
"I asked them if they had seen this before. The service adviser said "it was probably bad DEF" and that next time I should stick with Mopar DEF! They said that bad DEF could void the warranty and that it's well over $1000 to replace the pump. I asked them to prove to me that it was bad DEF and I got a blank stare. They ended up taking care of me so no harm, no foul and it's fixed. But apparently DEF is not all good DEF per the dealer. Go figure."
"I have a 2013 base model for work and had the same problem. First trip to the dealer they told me their was nothing wrong, second trip they accused me of "dumping bugs and grass into my def tank to plug and wreck the def pump". They determined I needed a new pump, but it was on national back order and they didn't know when I could get one. I ended up calling the RAM helpline and got a little feedback. Still took about two weeks to get my pickup back and it wasn't covered under warranty. Truck has 15,000 miles."
From IRV2.com:
"10k miles on our RAM 1500 Ecodiesel and I have just had my 5 CEL (check. Engine light). 4 days ago the light came on with a message that it detected DEF fluid. I took it to a dealer who reported that there was a Dodge advisory on this issue, they did their magic and of i went (5 hours later). Yesterday the CEL pops up again (maybe 50 miles driven) this time the dealer claims that the DEF is bad??? (It conforms with the ISO requirement RAM published) and since it is a user problem it will cost me about $500.00 to drain, clean and replace the DEF. OUCH
Any Ecodiesel users here ever have a similar problem?
From dieseljeeps.com:
"DEF seems to be coming up quite a bit in the jeep forums. Unfortunately I have a problem with it too.
Story time:
My JGC has 17k miles on it. Recently I purchased 5 gallons of Peak blue DEF from auto zone and put it in the DEF tank. After about 5 miles of driving I got the message that I used the wrong fluid. Now how could I have put the wrong fluid in I thought...It is the same fluid that I have used all along Even when I had to fill the tank from empty when I bought the vehicle new.
So my trip to the dealership starts and my adventure begins:
The first thing they did was test the fluid. It came out at 35% with their tools which is high for the industry standard of 32%(+/- 1%). This apparently caused so much crystallization in the system that I had to have a new pump, injector, hose and a thorough DEF tank scrub all after less than 2 hrs of driving with the "bad fluid" in the tank. I was told that it was my fault for using bad fluid and that nothing would be covered under warranty.
So I contacted Peak Blue and asked for their batch testing results. They came back stating that the fluid is 2 weeks old and their fluid is at 31.3% and that there is no way that it could have gone up that high in that short amount of time.
Chrysler care was next, I provided the testing info and documentation supporting injectors going bad and catalytic converter problems as root cause from multiple sources even chrysler certified repair dealerships. Chrysler came back and said "the dealership has tested the fluid and you are still liable for repairs".
So $2900 later I have my jeep back. I am still in shock as to how this isnt covered especially since it is a known problem and many of you have had the same thing happen but it was a warranty repair.
So what to do now? I am at a loss and really need some support."
From ramforumz.com:
"
I have a 2015 ram cummins diesel usually used peak bluedef after 10,000 miles got a message in message center "improper def see dealer"took it to the dealer cost me $540.00 to have the def system totally drained and cleaned.
contacted peak to make a claim to see if I could recover some $ peak technical support said its a problem with the manufacturer not peak.
have any members had any similar problems?
the ram dealer said def has a 1 year shelf life and must NOT be stored in a hot or warm environment."
There's more but I think I made the point. - batavia02ExplorerJust to be curious how much is the mopar brand def.
- HuntindogExplorerEveryone has a different tolerance for risk.
Some may think nothing of running out onto a busy highway to pick up a dollar... Others may buy the stock of an unknown startup company....
As the Safety Manager at my work, I routinely assess risk vs. reward. IE: will this work practice though faster, be more likely to adversely affect the health and welfare of our employees? Just how much benefit do we get, and at what cost.
Just last week we had a new process introduced.
I inspected it and made several suggestions to our management team on how to do it in a safer manner. Management instituted about 70% of my recommendations. I called another meeting. Management pointed out that the likely hood of an accident was very low.
I told them that I agreed with that but.... If an accident were to occur as a result of this change that it had a high probability of being a fatality.
When I walked out of the meeting, I was convinced that they were not going to heed my advice.
I was surprised when I came in the next day, that every bit of the new equipment involved was gone.
I guess they must have thought better of it after I left.
While this may seem to be not germane to the discussion here... It is very similar. Except our management team and I did not call each other names such as Chicken Little, etc.
We had an adult conversation where we both stated our opinions.
As for the DEF risk reward ratio... I just don't see much reward for the small but very expensive risk.
With WM DEF easily available @7.88 for 2.5 gallons vs. 2.75 a gallon at the pump, the savings is VERY small. It works out to 40 cents a gallon. Over 100,000 miles one would save less than $40.00 buying at truck stops. I will never miss that amount of money.
A DEF problem could cost over $2000.00 That would leave a mark for sure.
In closing, it is your money and your risk for reward. Do what makes you happy
