Which Honda Generator ?

Looking to purchase a 25-30 travel trailer. I will be getting a Honda generator for it, but don't know if I should get the EU2000, or 3000 ?

My use - just me.. maybe a few lights, water pump, water heater (only as needed) and 13,000 BTU AC / and or heater as needed.

Can I get away with just a EU 2000 ? I don't mind turning off the AC or Heat while other things need power - like the water heater. I would only use the water pump and water heater for an hour each night. Would never use Refrigerator, or other appliances.
  • Everything pretty much works on battery power and propane.
You will need 2000w to run the microwave or just use the stove top.
A/C only might work with a 2000w but as the temperature and elevation rises it gets even less likely. Connect a second 2000w in parallel and you are good to go in all conditions.
3000w Honda should run anything.... just not all at once.

Personally I loath to run a generator all day or night for cool air so if needed I am looking for a plug in.
  • If you use the AC, get the 3000. We have the 2000 but do not run the AC on it as i'm sure it would overload.
  • You may want to consider buying a pair of 2,000 W units with a pairing cable. I have a 3,000 W Honda and it's too heavy (130ish lbs.) for me to move around by myself, so I end up leaving it in the garage. I'm looking into a pair of the smaller units to make it easier to pack, move, etc. Brands with this feature include Honda, Yamaha, Ryobi, Kipor, and many others.

The WH and air will be a big draw on the 2kw. You can do it, but the 2k will be screaming. And even a 3kw may have trouble starting the air.

What size gen do i need?
    3kw (3000) Honda or 2 2kw?
    Yamaha EF2400iS--will it run a 13.5 air?
Honda EU3000 or Yamaha EF2400is? (2007) Why not cheaper for my needs? (2006)

    3000 won't run 15k air?
  • A 2,000 watt generator might or might not power the AC, it would be iffy, some would work, others not, and in any case you would not dare run anything else, even just the house battery charger built into the system.

In any case, running the hot water heater or the fridge on power from a generator is silly. Both run of propane, and would be much more efficient on propane anyway. The hot water heater, particularly so. On propane, it's probably at least 80% efficient. The engine in the generator is at best 33% efficient, throw in 90% efficient at the generator, line losses, and at best you are looking at overall about 20% efficiency.
