White Rim Trail coming up! (happy face)

We're getting ready to do the White Rim Trail in Canyonlands NP in the next few weeks. :)

I am really appreciating all the trip reports of the people who have traveled this path before me. The pictures really help. The commentary really helps. And the prep info really helps.

Thanks for your postings. I will certainly post after I go though the many pictures I will be taking.

Going with an older Toyota Land Cruiser, a Dodge with a 4wheel camper and me.

For those who have done this trip before... Any last min. musing I should think about?

Thanks!!!
  • For another trip to your liking ...

    Go to Earthroamer.com.

At HOME page, go to left of screen under Adventures.

Scroll down to OPHIR PASS, CO.

Check out scary pics of this trail! Scary to me anyway, lol.

    Next year maybe??
  • Bert,
I just brought our Super C home last night to start prepping her for our trip to Moab as well. CAN'T WAIT!!!!
However, keep in mind, starting April 12 through April 20 is Easter Jeep Safari. Moab will swell to about 20 times its normal occupancy with thousands of Jeeps in town. Most of the trails including the White Rim Trail will be crowded. Plan accordingly. Maybe we will see you on the trail.

  • Bert,

As Jefe said I think your timing is perfect considering how dry it's been this year. We did the WRT two years ago in May on our way to the Overland Expo which was a wetter year. It was still drying out in places. The scenery is amazing, so be sure to take your time. Bring plenty of bug spay too if you will be near the river. What campsite(s) do you have?

  • We can't add anything except that is one of the most awesome 4x4 trails in the entire country. Don't rush, take care of yourself and your vehicle ... and you'll have the time of your life.

If you get stuck - WAIT IT OUT do not WALK IT OUT ... plenty of help will come by eventually. It's a great trail, but not as isolated as one might think.

Just keep a eye on the weather, Blm's "Cowboy" campsite is a great place and easy to miss the way in off of Hwy 313. I'm planning another go at the WRT in the first part of July, just after the 4th, maybe I'll make it all the way around this time!

    Have a great time! :B
  • Yes! I have read every detail of both of your trip reports!!!
  • Bert,
It is a special place. You are going at a great time of year. Not too wet. Not too cold. Not too hot. Not too many people on bicycles.
My first trip around the White Rim was in a topless 1966 Land Cruiser in June of 1970. Oh, what a hot one it was. There is one hill after the mesa that had a very steep grade on the N. side; so steep it had a winch loop anchor point at the top drilled into a rock. We camped in the middle somewhere and it was so hot we just lay on the ground, not unlike our Piute ancestors.
Last time we were there in September 2010 (40 yrs. later?) the grade was leveled out some and the winch loop was gone. Such is progress. Let's hope the last little bottom land part of the trail is not under water. That scuttled out attempt to complete the Rim in 2010, but going back out the way we came had the effect of two different trails.

  • You will definitely enjoy the scenery. Especially along the part overlooking the Green River (you can't see any ground out the driver's side. LOL).
