I went the other way; I had 3 Fords over the course of 20 years and was a die hard Ford man. 2 of those trucks were diesels; one was a 1996 F-250 with a 7.3L that I bought new and kick myself to this day for selling it; the second was a 2003 F-350 DRW with a 6.0L diesel that I bought used and as much as I loved the truck the engine was a different matter.
I bought the truck in my signature new 3 1/2 years ago and have absolutely no regrets. As much as the 6.7L Ford diesel is much improved over previous models (7.3L not included), they still have some quirks that if they happen to you will cost you a small fortune. The biggest one is the Bosch CP4 high pressure fuel pump failure; some will tell you it is a small percentage of owners that this happens to, but if it happens to you and Ford denies warranty it truly is a disaster. We have several of these trucks at the city I work at and after one look under the hood and seeing the mess of hoses, shields, multiple radiators, and a bunch of other junk I couldn't identify, I knew I was not going to buy another Ford diesel. I was buying a truck that I was going to keep for a very long time and overall reliability and cost of ownership was very important to me so I went with the Cummins.
I have noticed an increasing amount of Ram/Cummins trucks in the RV parks that we frequent. The overall quality of the Ram truck now is at least as good if not better than the Ford, unlike in the past. If I was buying today it would be another Ram/Cummins. JMHO for the Ram haters coming up! :B
As a former owner of a 2005 Dodge CTD, you will hate the G56 Trans. Mine failed and they won't hold up. My 0.2$
What failed on it? I'm running Amsoil full synthetic ATF in mine and so far so good. When I drained the factory fluid it looked good as new.
Synchronizers... do I get a prize? :B
