Then you cannot discount fleet sales with that line of thinking?
The city I work at purchases trucks at the lowest initial purchase price (bid). Unfortunately long term repair costs are not considered although our fleet has been steadily moving to V10 gas units to replace our many Ford diesels which have cost a fortune to keep running. As an example we had a 2006 E-450 cutaway van with less than 50k miles on it that cost $32k in repairs in it's last 2 years and had countless weeks of downtime.
The independent haulers need to consider both downtime and cost of repairs in order to stay in business. They cannot absorb the downtime or high repair costs like a fleet customer can.
I agree, I have a fleet of F150's and 350's in my shop lot we keep for back up just for when a truck goes down.
