I’ve heard a number of Cummins fans saying they are waiting for an 8 or 10 speed transmission before getting a new truck. Why? Does the Cummins struggle to get your trailer moving from a stop? Or are you running higher rpm cruising than you’d like? Or is it just because Ford and GM have 10 speeds?
Unless Chyrsler/Stelantis has some HD transmission engineers in the skunk works or Aisin/Stelantis can come to some economic gain from developing a new transmission or even the same relationship with ZF or Allison that their transmissions will only be used in Rams, I don't see it happening anytime soon. The problem with Chrysler/Stelantis is they don't design transmissions anymore and have to outsource them.
I will say this when going from a 4 speed to a 5 speed and then to a 6 speed transmission I only noticed performance improvements when towing and appreciated the extra gear with each transmission upgrade.
