wifi

does anyone know of any equipment to add to a travel trailer to pick up wifi if you are not in an area like a KOA with wifi service. We do a lot of camping in areas that don't have wifi service provided.

You forgot to add that you also need to bring the wheelbarrow of cash with you for the truck when compared to the prices on a MiFi or mobile phone set-up as a local hotspot. ;)

We do the VERIZON MIFI here to give us a WIFI HOTSPOT for up to five WIFI enabled devices here. Works flawlessly for us. We have the 3GB data plan and does ok for us to check our emails, check-in with kids, pay a few bills, and some surfing of the internet. This is not good to downstream TV or MOVIEs however as one movie will easily eat up over 1GB in a couple of hours. You will need a minimum of 20GB DATA PLAN to watch TV and MOVIES. I have extended the MIFI connection big time using one of the WILSON SLEEK cradles where you just sit the MIFI unit into to it. This has outside antenna and extends the WIFI footprint all around our camp site setup.

If we walk on trails or down to beaches we just carry the MIFI unit with us in shirt pocket and carry our small computers or tablets.

We have done well over the years using the VERIZON for our off-road camping. Learned from my working days that VERIZON was the best carrier for the way back off the beaten path locations. Very few times we have not had cell phone service...

  • We use the MiFi by AT&T......we get internet almost anywhere.......I like using my computer, not a phone, to type letters, etc.......so we prefer the MiFi.

DItto on the phone (smart phone with 3g or 4g service), or a mifi type device, which is a mobile hot spot without phone capabilities.

There are extended range USB plug in style wifi atnennas you can buy, but if you aren't near a wifi signal, they are useless. All they do is give you a stronger signal if you are in a campground, rv park, etc that has a wifi system. So, you still have to be in an area with wifi.
  • I recently found out you can use your smart phone to create your own wifi hotspot. I went into att yesterday to talk to the guy about it and by the time I left I was able to hook up his tablet to my wifi. Amazing. Came home and was able to hook up my laptop on my first try. The only thing required is the phone and a cell signal. Seems technology was marching on as I was trying to figure out my smart phone.
My current contract for 2 phones only went up $30 a month for 2 gig of data. Call your phone provider.
  • If no WiFi is provided where you camp then most likely there is no WiFi specially free WiFi in the area. There are antennas that will allow you to receive WiFi from a longer distance but, these are usually very directional. You would have to know where to aim the unit. This is one of them http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA52S1P39958&nm_mc=OTC-pr1c3grabb3r&cm_mmc=OTC-pr1c3grabb3r-_-Electronics-_-GENERIC-_-9SIA52S1P39958&scpid=7&scid=scsho6948756.
It will receive a signal up to about a mile away. Seems to me your problem will be on the outbound side though. The antenna on the other end might not get the signal that you transmit. While you will transmit it, the receiving range of the other antenna might not equal its output range.
but on the other hand it is only about $30.00.
  • The only real option is to use your phone as a hot spot. Most require you to be in the most recent plan in order to do so, but for many its well worth it. Speeds are better than you'll find at most campground WiFi networks.
  • I use a MiFi. It works on 4G cell service. Got mine thru AT&T. Some smart phones can be setup as a hotspot
