That diesel will not warm up in 5 miles one way.......therefore the oil will not get warm enough, the tranny oil will not get warm enough, the rear differential oil will just barely get warm enough.
The turbo will soot up
The truck will probably have to be 'forced regen' due to lack of drive time/speeds for normal regens
And it will add $$$$ in initial cost over Hemi Gas Engine
Not the best choice for a short commuter/grocery getter
clueless post is clueless
What Old-Biscuit described was my situation, 09' Cummins, 10 mile round trip to work, numerous forced regens, turbo cleaned, turbo replaced, egr replaced, numerous check engine lights...etc..etc. Dumped it and got a Hemi.
From what I understand these issues are much fewer and farther between with the new DEF systems. - HuntindogExplorerThe new diesels warm up a LOT faster than the old ones. It is a side effect (benefit?) of the new emissions equipment.
We use ours for daily commuting of 3 miles one way.. We do usually get a longer run in once a week when we go out of town to train the dogs.
The only thing I wish it was able to do is to manually trigger a regen when we are on a longer trip. - Jayco23FBExplorerNo..I work on a Fire Engine that is a diesel our trips are short and frequent. It has caused no major problems because of it. However it doesn't do the engine or drivetrains any benifit either. All engines and drivetrains benifit from fully warmed up operation. If you need a diesel for towing buy it and drive it. If you don't really need a diesel, gas my be a better option for you. I choose gas for my current set up. It works for me. Diesels are more expensive to maintain compared to gas, if you buy a diesel maintain it properly don't skimp.

Looking at a 2014 Ram 2500 diesel but will my 10 mile round trip daily commute damage the engine? Should I just get the Hemi?
Go ahead get the diesel. You know you want one! I drive mine daily back and forth to work then give it a good exercise when towing my big fiver. - thomasmnileExplorer

It is 5 miles one way.
I've got 97k on a 2007 Expedition so we don't sit around and watch the grass grow. Always on the move on the weekends. My camper is light but I want a bigger one down the road. I've never owned nor driven a diesel anything.
Thanks
I have the pre DPF/SCR 3rd. generation version of the Cummins in an '05 Ram 3500. I'm retired so most of the mileage logged is short trips and some towing. I have yet to find a pile of iron rubble in the driveway because of how it's driven. Sometimes when it's cool, I make a short trip and the engine never gets to " normal operating temp".............and yet it runs fine. - I am no expert on this subject but here is my take.... My 09 diesel is my every day truck with about 7 miles one way.... I have 96,000 miles on it now and only have had a bunch of regen issues... It seems like the truck has always wanted to go into regen.
Since I took it off the road and use it for towing only ( this year) I have noticed A difference in the regen mode... - colliehaulerExplorer IIII would talk with a a Diesel mechanic, not one person on the forum will help you with a repair bill. My opinion a 5 mile drive in cold weather will not bring it up to temp.
- Artum_SnowbirdExplorerMy 7.3 will go about five miles before the transmission will shift into overdrive during cold weather at 50 mph.... and that is only into the +10F range. I guess it takes that long to let things warm up and get lubricated.
