Wind damage

Well, this evening, we have been pained with severe winds. Just after sunset, I heard a crash in the back yard and saw a large limb in my neighbor's yard. I had to put some shoes on and as I walked out the door, another limb came out of the same tree and hit the top of my camper. I was hoping that the way that it landed, that there would be not damage or at the most, a rip in the brand new tarp that I put over it last week, after cleaning the roof.

YEP, that little black cloud is still hanging over my head. Not only is there a big hole in the new tarp, but there is a good sized gash that is in the roof which goes into the bathroom ceiling. AND with the rain that was coming down, the interior is wet ... just from the few minutes that it took me to open the camper and get into the bathroom.

I did put a temporary patch of Gorilla tape over the hole to keep further rain out of there. I also threw on a temporary patch on the tarp to help. I have turned on the furnace and two electric heaters to try to dry out what water has come in so far. Seems to be holding three hours later.

So I guess I will have to file an insurance claim. It is insured with my truck but it is off the truck, in my driveway, for the winter. I had planned on doing some electrical work on the interior.

So here is my question. Will I have to file under my home owners? I am also wondering if since it poked a hole through the wood and ripped the rubber roof material, would I be able to get a complete roof redone? It is a 1997 vintage, but the roof was in great shape until the limb punctured it.

I'm sure that they will only want to patch it, but it also took out a section of the carpeted ceiling in the bath and there is wood sticking through.

I guess we will find out how good Farmer's Insurance will be.

  • My boat was once damaged in my driveway and I filed under both my home owner's insurance and the boat specific policy. I was entitled under both and chose the coverage with the least deductable to make the needed repairs.
  • FreeLanceing,

One way of not worring about insurance coverage on everything you own that's insurable is to have one complete blanket policy. Home, property, vehicles, RV's etc. BIG multi-policy discounts are the norm. It's much cheaper than having various insurance policies and there's no loopholes on anything. You live in the same locality as we do and by combining into a full blanket policy with a Michigan based Insurance group we cut our total yearly premimums more than in half. This was done over 20 years ago and I get quotes from at least 2 other insurance companies each year to make sure we are still saving big time and we sure are! Ours happens to be Citizens Insurance base in Howell, MI and our agent is Oakes located downtown but you may find another to your liking.

Had 2 claims on our RV's (one in 2006-7 from a tree going thru our 5th big 3 axle Carriage parked on our acreage up north will we we in Montana with our TC. The insurance coverage and payout was simply outstanding and they couldn't do enough for us. We are talking a very big cash settlement and even let us buy back the carcass for what it would cost them to have it hauled away which we then sold to a friend who rebuilt it over the winter and it lives again and it's gorgeous and looks new.

The other claim was from a tornado going over us in Florida last winter when in a CG and falling large branches ripped 6 gashes in the 29' Carriage Carrilite's rubber roof. The insurance paid 100% of the total replacement including recovering the plywood which was also gouged and the new thru roof vents and side moldings etc. Never a question or any skimping done or attempted. Nope, our premimums didn't raise a dime and are still $35/6 months with $100 deductible full coverage on the Carrilite and just paid it about 2 weeks ago.

Coverage includes $2000 personal contents in the RV and above that is covered by our same insurance company blanket home owners plan. Also has a $2000 trip interuption coverage and full towing separate from the auto policy. Out big Lance TC same policy premimum is $32/6 months. No claims had on our vehicles or our main home. Home is insured for $450k total. We have sold or other places now due to our age but still have 2 other plots of land acreages here in Michigan which they include also in our policy and also my finished to match our home pole building is covered. We have totally clean driving records for more than 20 years and of course that helps too.

I can't say enough about the positive of having one blanket policy covering everything as there can be no fighting between insurance comapanies since there's only one! Our total premimum for everything including the vehicles with full coverage, home, RV's, properties, pole building, etc is under $2000/year. The blanket policy also has decreasing deductibles for the vehicles and the home and are now down the under $100 on each from the $250 deductible it started at. Very tough to beat!

My Brother in Florida pays almost 4 times what we pay and he only has one vehicle and one RV and his home which is valued within 50K of ours. Weather, hurricanes, and many other factors make huge differences in insurance premiums.

BTW, only a few branches and a few dead trees fell in our area from Sunday's wind storm. Ine fell across a main electric feeder line and we lost power for approx 3-1/2 hours before they got it fixed. Lake Michigan and all the big sandunes really do help us along the shoreline!

Could possibly be of help to you also.
  • if a tornado picks up a tractor, blows it 1/4 mile down the road into my house, and I am supposed to hold the farmer responsible?
    bumpy
  • If the tree is healthy, it's likely his neighbor isn't liable for the damadge. I have State Farm for house and cars. Off the truck the house pays, on the truck it's that policy. My house policy covered the hail damadge on the camper that was off the truck.

  • The cost for the repairs will probably be more than the consider it to be worth. They totaled my TT a couple of yrs ago for hail damage. It had a alum roof and looked like a golf ball texture had been applied. Took the check and kept the TT.

Exactly why I spend about $180 a year to have a separate full coverage insurance policy...
    why I keep trees trimmed.
  • Exactly why I spend about $180 a year to have a separate full coverage insurance policy just on the TC. For me its called "peace of mind".
  • When I had this discusion with my agent he said, mine is only covered when on the truck. Homeowners only covers things that can't be licensed or registered. Things that can be licensed or registered need there own policy. For years I had a rider on the camper. I also had my JD tractor covered that way as well. Anymore I just self insure what I can. I pay cash for everything so not a big deal to replace anything under 20k or so. Always good to have a talk with your insurance guy before this happens. I go in with a list every 6 mo or so and ask what if, am I covered. Your experiance may be different I think all companies handle these things in there own way. I did learn if your nieghbors tree lands on your fence its yours to fix. Even if you begged the neighbor to cut the old rotten thing down. The burden lies where it falls. You have civil court but generaly its your baby. Good luck. That storm rolled through here as well. I need to go around this morning and check my properties and other stuff for damage. Hope for the best.
  • Photog101, sorry to hear about the damage to your camper. Do you know that if your camper is off your truck that Farmer's Insurance won't cover it? If they don't then I would suggest you try to use your own home owners Insurance for your claim. However before you contact your insurance, i have to say what Genecop has suggested. Also take plenty of photo's of the damage. The tree as well as the camper. Good luck on this and please let us know of any feedback.
