Wiring License plate bracket

I buried this question in one of my previous posts and didn't get a response so here's take 2:

I have some new LED tail-lights on order but will need to install a license plate bracket holder. First off, do most states require a lighted license plate bracket on an RV?

Secondly, are brackets with lights wired into the tail-light? I've never tackled this project before.

  • Yes to the light and yes to just tapping into the running light wiring of the tail light.
  • My license plate was in a different place and already had its own lights. You can use something like this one that I found on Amazon. You can get them in black as well. You will just need to find a way to route the wiring neatly as mentioned above. And yes, hook it to the tail light, not the stop/turn circuit.
  • In concept the wiring is easy. You just need to run a wire from the tail light circuit and a ground wire to the lighted license plate bracket. Getting the wires to the right place might be hard. I ended up going from the tail light to the inside of the trailer then down a couple of inches to a good place below the tail light. I concealed the wiring with a standard electrical box plastic cover. It looks OK. On my trailer, the license plate bracket is below the passenger side tail light. Obviously, weather proof everything with butyl and caulking around the edges.
  • Respectfully, what difference does it make? Your state, Oregon, does. See 2015 ORS 816.320
  • I purchased the Bargman LED, Surface Mount Light, which doesn't have a light that shines down on the license plate. Since others on this forum also bought and installed the same lights I was hoping they might give me on some insights on wiring a lighted bracket.
  • I think states require lighted license, most likely a federal mandate. Most trailer tail lights have a clear bottom section by license plate for illumination of plate. The brackets are usually mounted to/under tail light assembly, so no separate light needed on bracket.

  • The "bracket" doesn't need to be lighted, but the license plate must have a light, usually one on each side of it...usually the lights are in the bumper or trunk lid....not the bracket itself.

and yes, wire it to the tail light circuit.
