That sofa does look nice. How much storage is there underneath?
Back to the countertop issue. If you look at the floor plans, it appears to me that the 840 has a larger counter. There seems to be more space behind the sink and between the cooktop and sink. Also the overhead cabinets appear to be a bit longer and deeper, the 840 puts up a good fight in both categories. It's just missing the pantry option the 850 has.
There is zero storage under the roll-over-sofa as it is on the part of the camper that hangs over the truck bed rails. In the 850 you loose the "stubby-cubby" near the door and the smaller cabinet at the forward end of the dinette. The 840 dinette appears to have a little more storage space based on the sketches.
The roll-over-sofa makes very easily into a nice bed and you don't have to fight with cushion gaps.
The sketches do appear to show more counter space but again no counter extension option. The sink cover could help a bit. I didn't need the extra counter space so I didn't choose the sink cover or counter extension.....knowing I could get those later if needs changed.
As for the table, as far as I know, it is the same size regardless of dinette or roll-over-sofa choice. It is nice to be able to slide it in/out when sitting or walking past it in the 850. It is a bit awkward to store as there is no designated place to store it. With the dinette it is part of the bed, not so with the roll-over-sofa. It can be laid on the queen bed or bunk-bed during the day, but it all the beds will be used at night my plan is to stand it on end in front of the stove and bungee it to the stove handle so it doesn't tip over. I do wish northwoods mfg. would have addressed this issue, my previous camper had a couple brackets in the roof that allowed you to slide the table into for overhead storage....may look into doing that myself at some future date if the need arises.
I to had to deal with the lack of no local dealers and nothing stocked locally. I never saw a real live wolf creek 850 until the day I saw mine! I'm happy with the dealer I chose even though they are 5 1/2 hours away. I studied a lot of dealer listings, photos and videos and emailed "magazine publishers" and read several articles and write-ups here on rv.net and on the internet.
Have you considered a factory tour? Or even a trip to a dealer that has both on the lot? Also call dealers near and far to ask questions and get quotes.......that will shed a LOT of light on who knows their product and who you should actually shop with. I was both surprised and disappointed with most dealers within a days drive. Then again I live in the "burmuda triangle" of truck camper dealerships.....the have all disappeared from this area!
Also be careful of the due date a dealer (especially a smaller one) gives you if I had it to do over I think I would have made a few calls to northwoods mfg. myself. I ordered mine in March 2013 and was told, by the dealership it would be delivered in August and would be the very first 2014, it was delivered at the end of October 2014 well after the newly designed 2014's were showing up on dealer lots out West. The Salesman blamed the manufacturer a lot, I just blamed it on the model changeover.
