Only improvement I could see in that design would be to go with the grain on the angled parts so as not to "hang up" going cross grain when the TC eases down onto the bed.
OR
install 4 pieces of the thick & slick hard plastic on the angled portion of the guide. Of course the thickness of the slick plate would have to be taken into account when cutting the blocks. I would think any trucking Co. might have a few used/damaged 5th wheel "slick plate" laying around or in their dumpster.
I always had them on my rigs when trucking, last 30 years.
I'm thinking of something along those lines my self, thanks for the inspire Sleepy!!
