Best checking/debit card for US citizens

I am new to RV'ing but have been a traveler for a long time. I've always thought this checking account has been the best. They reimburse all ATM fees anywhere in the world. The exchange rate is set by Visa on a daily basis and the rate is a fraction of a percent above the going market. Much better than banks. You do need to link it to a Schwab brokerage account but no deposit is necessary and there are no fees. I just thought I'd share the info.

  • I made a withdrawal this week from our U.S. account and happened to be online just now checking the account. Here are the fees my credit union charged:

    01/12/2017 CURRENCY CONV FEE $0.05
01/12/2017 MC CROSS BORDER FEE $0.22
    01/12/2017 ATM FEE $1.50
  • supposedly BOA is aligned with scotiabank which is in mexico.
  • Citibank owns Banamex (Banco Nacional de Mexico), any credit card will be honored at any bank it just depends on what fee you will be charged for the transaction, as stated check with your bank or credit union, we have Citibank debit card and get the 30 peso fee returned within 72 hours, always use bank ATM, in daylight never at night at the bank.

  • The question of where and how to get cash in Mexico comes up all the time on this forum. We use credit union debit cards to get cash from ATM (cajero automatico) at banks - we prefer machines at banks during business hours in case there is a problem. We have found this is the best way to get the best exchange rate - better even than going into the same bank to get cash from a teller. We rarely use our credit card in Mexico as we get charged an international exchange rate fee or something like that - others say they have cards that do not charge this fee - check with your card issuer to find out. We rarely get charged the fee at the ATM as our card is in some sort of system that has an arrangement with many banks so the fee is waived. There are many options. How you find out the best one I have no clue. We choose credit unions as they usually have the best deal for many banking services.

I haven't heard anything. Care to elaborate?

I have 24/7/365 support with my choice of banks and to me that is worth a lot.

Several years ago a tech working on a BanaMex ATM suggested that Mexican ATMs were likely more finicky than USA machines about errors in a worn magnetic stripe. I keep my cards in paper sleeves given away by my bank. I have a pair of VISA cards, just in case.
