Best route from Philadelphia, PA to New Haven, CT

We are traveling to New Haven,Connecticut from Timberlane Campground outside Philadelphia (I-295) for the first time in our 36' Fifth Wheel. What is the best route to avoid NYC, low bridges, tunnels, tolls and traffic congestion. We are experienced RVrs but like as stress free a trip as possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  • Thanks for all the help. That was the route we had considered. Nice to have it confirmed. Staying in North Branford, CT. Safe travels.

just how far out of your way would you go.....can do 295 to 95 to 287 around to Sufferin,NY...then cross the Tap that way....then 287 right to 95 in Ct..no tolls other than the Tap...where in New Haven are you going....? no campgrounds there
  • What they said, follow 287 to Tappan Zee Bridge and North on 95.
If you go where you should not go with a 5ers, watch the RR bridges.
  • I agree with Matt; follow 287 to Tappan Zee Bridge and North on 95. You definitely want to avoid the GW Bridge in NYC if you can, never a pleasant ride with or without trailer.

Good luck and enjoy your trip!
  • I just reread your request and realized I got this backwards.
So, read it from the bottom up. Or plot it on Street Atlas and the hit "Reverse Route".

As a long time resident (refugee) from Mystic/Stonington, I used the Tappen Zee Bridge and the Garden State Parkway to the New Jersey Turnpike for this route. I was never driving anything very large in those days, but they allow trucks now.

So, since you and the 5er can't take the Merrit, you can run down I-95 about one exit into NY then pick up I-684 to I-287 to the TZ. Stay with 287 until you can get to GSP and take that south to NJTP.

    Safe Travel
