Best Rt - Daytona Beach to Unicoi SP, Helen GA

We'll be taking our 30' TT up to Unicoi SP near Helen, GA this Jul. We're looking for a route that allows us to avoid Atlanta and is RV friendly. We were looking at taking I-75 N to Macon, 129 N to Cleveland, GA, County Rd 75 N to County Rd 356 into the park. Is this a wise route? We've never taken the camper into the mountains and just want to be sure there won't be a huge issue. Anyone with a better route woild be appreciated also. We normally us RV Trip Wizard for trip planning but it keeps taking us to Atlanta which we would like to avoid.
  • Your route to Helen and to Unicoi is OK but there will be a tremendous amount of traffic from Cleveland over to Helen. There is a two lane bridge over the Chattahoochee River that stays jammed much of the time due to pedestrians walking randomly across the road on both sides of the river. You have to cross river to get to 356.
The CG is pretty steep and road is narrow going into it. Just use caution. Great area in Helen to spend an afternoon wandering around, looking and snacking.

  • Consider the 441 corridor. From Daytona go over to the 301 to miss Jacksonville. Follow it to Jesup and pick up 341 and take it to McRae-Helena and pick up 441. Stay on 441 to Cornelia and pick up 23 for a short stretch to 105. Follow 105 up to 17/255 and take it into Helen.

There are other secondary roads you might take as alternatives that the last time I was in that area they were acceptable to pull your 30 footer on. I like the 441 corridor when we go down to Florida. Less stressful than 75 or 95.

We have a bit of a time situation so we have to use I-75 for a piece. If we weren't so time sensitive I would definitely give this a shot. We like going up I-75 to Forsyth and picking up 83 to Madison where we'll pick up 441. This will give us an opportunity to make some time on the highway, go around Atlanta and see a bit of the GA country side. Much thanks for the information.
