Does anyone take the Skyway with their RV?

We are headed to metro Detroit from SE Wisconsin on Sunday. We do this trip with some regularity, and the IL/IN boarder along 80/94 south of the city has become mind-numbingly problematic. No matter when we go (often Sunday afternoon), the truck traffic is so overloaded that we spend more than an hour delayed south of the city. It is making me wonder if we'd be better off, on a Sunday, just going through the city and taking the skyway across.

Does anyone drive their RV through the city and across the Skyway? Any other bright suggestions? That stretch of road is just killing us every time!
  • Another vote for 294 to 80. Going through town is "risky". We live in southeast WI too, when we go through Chicago we usually leave around 8:00 am (weekdays), by the time we get down to Lake Forest traffic southbound isn't an issue. I would think on Sunday (morning) traffic would be less of an issue than weekdays.

    Good luck, enjoy your trip.

  • I got stuck in the skyway on my last trip. I always bypass it, but they had the 80exit closed and didn’t have very good detour signs up, so I got back on and it took me to the skyway. It’s not bad but to expensive. And you end up sitting in heavy traffic going through the downtown area!

    I would take 294 around to 80.
  • I would take 294 rather tan the Skyway. The earlier you go through the better. Traffic gets pretty heavy at places, but just plan which lane you want to be in and stay there as long as possible. I usually hang in the just right of center lane with the semis. For traffic and accidents, there is an app called INRIX for you phone with real time updates.
  • With traffic and accidents being commonplace, I would check Google Maps at the last minute to see which route is the fastest. I suspect the Tri-State (I-294) will be the best route. The construction will probably be shut down on Sunday.
I stopped taking the Skyway due to the cost. For me, it’s usually faster to go around the city anyway. My best guess is that traffic on the Skyway itself wouldn’t be too bad. Getting there would be a pain in the derrière, mainly due to the usual downtown traffic mess. Not that anyone will attend, but the White Sox do have a game Sunday afternoon. Their stadium is next to the expressway.
I have pulled a trailer through Chicago. If you know what lane you need to be in, it’s no big deal. If traffic is heavy and you need to change lanes at the last second because you are in the wrong lane, you obviously have a problem.
To relieve stress I would suggest following a semi. They are excellent drivers and usually maintain a steady speed. Obviously don’t get too close in case they need to stop quickly. I’ve found that people don’t want to be behind them due to lack of visibility, so you won’t get too many people cutting in front of you.
    Safe travels!
