Evansville to Indianapolis airport (I-69) question

I will be driving from Evansville area up to Indianapolis Airport in a couple of weeks and plan to take I-69 north.

It appears as if I-69 is not complete up towards Indianapolis. Is it best to take 39 at Martinsville up to I-70 to the airport?

If anyone familiar with the area could comment I would sure appreciate it.

^^--Thank you, John, for the update.

I am used to that route and will heed the advice. Perhaps next year it will all be complete (but wonder if it will be the preferred route to the airport once 465 is done.)

I like allowing plenty of time (don't like to rush) and enjoy the 2-lane Indiana country roads. If I get stuck be behind a 'binder, then so be it... life goes by too quick without needing to add to the haste.

Any construction progress update?

on edit:
In looking at the "I-69 Finish Line" website, it appears that it is complete up to 144 at Waverly.

I69 has progressed, but there have been closures on 465. Preferred route is still 69 to Martinsville, take exit 137 and use 39 to jump over to 67 and then Ameriplex to the airport.

OP here, thank for the latest update.

I did the suggested route recently and it is a pretty direct way to go. I definitely notice the less construction from last year.

I am used to that route doing now for a few years in a row and I gotta' ask the question: Is this still the preferred route to get to the airport even when I-69 get completed?

Any local update on construction progress?

Better than it was last year since they are no longer detouring all traffic. Still a short distance of 55 and 45MPH right before Martinsville. 69 to 39 to 67 to Ameriplex is for sure the way to go. I was just up there Wednesday. Only thing new this year is the ramp to 39 in Martinsville has changed. Same place, but the layout has changed so the turn in it is pretty tight and you have two roundabouts as you get to the end.

When you see the sign for exit 87 1 mile, toot your horn as you’ll be close to me!

37 south of I-465 is a construction mess. I would absolutely use 39, 67, and Ameriplex. I live here.

Hey folks, OP here...
Y'all helped greatly a year ago on the question. I will be doing the same thing in two weeks.

Last year I took I-69 to 37 to 465 to the airport. The road was good albeit, I wish the interstate construction was more complete. That was on a Sunday morning (and during covid.) Very little traffic at 6AM.

This year I plan on leaving around the same time or so but on a Monday and plan on doing the same route.
Has any more construction been completed in a year? Not too much update I could fins.

How is traffic on a Monday. Need to make a flight, wheels up at 11AM.
Should I get going earlier?

Construction is more significant now. 37 is closed at Martinsville so all traffic is forced onto 39 and over to 67. They added some extra lanes to help as you follow the detour. I’ve driven the route a half dozen times since the closure. Most of the time it’s just heavy traffic, but on a tight schedule at a busy time, you might want to consider 69 to 231 to I70 at Cloverdale. It’s longer, but more predictable.

If you go through Martinsville, get in the far left turn lane as you turn onto 39 going up, then stay in the right lane heading south to avoid having to change lanes in traffic. Don’t stop anywhere in Martinsville as it can be tough to get out into traffic to leave. Going up, don’t follow the detour signs back to 37. Just stay on 67 and turn left on Ameriplex Parkway.it’s the next major road after Camby Rd.

John- thanks for that added option/ information. I will consider it as well.

One thing to note is that my travel back to the airport coming up in 5 weeks will be on a Sunday morning to catch a 9:40AM flight. I like to allow 2 hours at the airport so plan to be there around 7:30. I am hoping that traveling this route at that hour on a Sunday will present little truck traffic.

Jogging over to 67 via 39 is the preferred route. You hit Ameriplex Parkway before Indy and can cut across to the airport. I traveled regularly for work and have driven the route many, many times.

Thanks for the follow-up reply.
I fly into Indianapolis and am more concerned about good roads for the return as I will need to head back up to catch a very early morning flight. I will take that route down south on arrival to scope it out for the return trip.
Thanks.

Yes, that's what I meant. Sections can't be called I69, because it's not expressway
