Florida to Gatlinburg

We are planning a first big trip with our '09 Phaeton. We leave in July from Tampa headed to Twin Creek Resort in Gatlinburg. Any advice from you 'ol timers out there?
  • If you want interstate and scenic. I75 north to Cartersville Ga. then Hwy 411 N. to 321 in Maryville Tenn and PigeonForge Then straight into Gatlinberg. I would stay in Pigeonforge. Gatlinberg is only 3 or 4 miles from there.
  • what Ivylog said. I-40 to 66 through Sevierville. Traffic can be busy on the weekends on 66-441. If you need an alternative campground we like River Plantation in Sevierville. Easy drive or trolly to Gatlinburg.
  • Twin Creek is tight for large DPs. I am sure they will put you up front across from the office. At times the office can be a little testy. The CG is nice, quiet, and clean and well located to the trolly and town. Enjoy your trip.

Welcome to the foruns and your first trip in your DP. The shortest is I-75 to Macon and then 129 and 441 BUT 441 through the NP in a 40' DP on your first trip worries me. Not knowing what you've driven before and if you are pulling a car I would suggest: Hitting Atlanta at a non rush hour and going straight through on I-75 all the way to Knoxville and then I-40 east to 66 and then south to Gatlinburg. After going to Newfound Gap in a car you will have a better idea if you want to use 441 south back to Fla.
  • What's your preference, Interstates or "scenic" ?

My personal preference is for a US route that roughly parallels the shortest Interstate route. Those roads often are in really good shape and have minimal traffic.

The only problem with that is going through big towns. There I hop on the Interstate due to time and ease of navigation.
