Georgian Bay - Sept. or Oct.?

We are planning a trip to the Georgian Bay in either Sept. or Oct. We read where it is "possible" to see the Northern Lights in Oct. Is that something that could happen if we wait, and do you normally get snow in the area of the Georgian Bay in October?
  • My family have lived in the Georgian Bay area for over 40 years and have never seen the northern lights. Now I am not saying it is not possible. Maybe up near Manitoulin.

Snow is possible in October. Nothing heavy likely but the roads could be slippery at times. We have had Halloween when it has been 28C and others when it is -2C. It is a hard time of year to predict.

Thank you so much. I think it will be September!! We will probably make this trip around the 3rd week. We are looking forward to this trip and are trying to map out things we should not miss seeing and doing, biking and visiting lighthouses are at the top of our list.

I think that that will be a great time. Remember, Oct 13 is our Thanksgiving.

I highly recommend Killber Provincial Park, and the Kilcoursie campground in particular. Be advised that most of the provincial parks are very busy. You can book sites up to 5 mths in advance (ontario parks web site). Never seen the lights from anywhere around georgian bay though.
  • No matter what parks or CG you choose check closing dates. Killbear for instance closes around the middle of October. Some may close September.
  • We are looking at the 3rd wk. of September. I looked at Killbear, and it looks great. I read reports of bears in the campgrounds as well. That is OK. I know in the western U.S. you normally can not hike with dogs because of the animals, and would probably prefer not to hike with her where there are bears anyway. She is a non-barker, but if she was looking out the window and saw a bear, I am not certain she would not bark and maybe attract it to the camper if we are not there. My guess is the only time the bears are in this campground is after dusk and at dawn though. Any ideas on this? You have all been very helpful.
  • First...If there are bears in the park and there may not be any, they will be out anytime of day. The camp staff usually know if there are bears in the park.

The reason you do not take your dog on a trail is because they usually will run off and find the bear. Then, P**s the bear off. The dog runs back to you with a bear on his tail. If you need to take your dog with you on the trail make sure he is on a leash.

If a bear wants in your trailer, dog or not he will get in. Keep your site bear safe and you will not have any issues. Talk to the park staff and they will give you their thoughts on what to do about your dog.

Don't be afraid of bears so that it wrecks your holiday...but be respectful of where you are.
