going through atlanta ga

I always go around Atlanta. Went through there once, never again! Good Sam puts out a campground book you can use to find campgrounds, or you can use GPS.

Atlanta is not all that bad as long as you don't try going through during rush hour. We usually hit there about 10:00 am. There is always traffic, but it moves.

You can use the HOV lane with the boat as long as there are 2 or more of you in the MH. We take it all the time and have passed or been passed by the popo and never been stopped. There are always landscapers and contractors using it as well with pick-up and trailers with 2 or 3 people in their truck. You just need to watch the signs since there are some left hand exits from the HOV.

The advantage of going through downtown all the semis have to go around unless they are making an in town delivery so they are few and far between.

Which interstates will you be coming into Atlanta and then which one leaving? I'd guess I75 coming in? Leaving likely would be I75 or I85 depending on where in FL you are headed (Gulf or Atlantic side). Your route through Atlanta would really depend on that.

We've done Walmart and Flying J's for quick overnight stops (stopping after 9pm and heading out before 8am). Do a Google search for walmart overnight or walmart RV. You'll find LOTS of info.

If you travel I75 south of Atlanta, there is a nice GA state park called High Falls less that 1 mile off exit 198. I've seen lots of folks do 1 night stops there. There are a few pull through sites so you could stop without unhooking boat.

Be aware the HOV lanes on north I85 are now High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes. My understanding is if vehicle has only 1 or 2 people in it, you must have a Peach Pass sticker and you will pay to ride in the HOT lane. If 3 or more, motorcycle or have alternative fuel tag you can still use HOT lane for free. Since I only go that way a few times a year, I play it safe and just stay out of the lane now.

I have gone thru Atlanta and around Atlanta and found it to be no big deal either way. In fact the go around has a ton of trucks on it. But then again I am from Chicago, so everything else is a piece of cake for me.

Just beware that 'many' rest areas no long allow staying overnight.

Don't plan on using the The Flying J just outside Atlanta to dump. Some brilliant engineer designed the concrete driveway along side the dump station to slope AWAY from the dump. Trust me nothing will come out of your tanks. :R

There is a real nice easy on easy off KOA just before you hit Atlanta. I usually plan to stay there the night before and get up real early and go 'through' Atlanta before their rush hour and it is a nice pleasant drive.

This has been discussed previously on this Forum and there are opinions on both sides. The bold RVers go thru Atlanta but some of the rest of us go around; me included.
The interstate thru Atlanta is full of curves and entrance/exits and, to me, is quite stressful and I'm from Chicago!

Atlanta is no worse than any other city to drive through. Stay out during rush hours and you should have no problems driving straight through.

We go around Atlanta by taking exit 290 (GA 20) west to US411 South to US27 South. From Columbus GA, you can either go back east to I-75 or stay on US 27 or US 19. We prefer US19. We take US 19 all the way to US98 in Florida, then go west to the Suncoast Parkway (toll). This route only works if you have plenty of time. To find campgrounds, we use www.woodalls.com and then check the reviews on www.rvparkreviews.com. We use mapquest or google maps to route.
