Jasper/Banff, late August/Early Sept Weather-Decision Made

So it's been 25 years or so since I went to Banff and Jasper. I remember hot weather at the beginning of our trip and snow when we left just after Labor Day. Weather.com gives some info but I'd rather hear it from those who live or travel there. I realize averages are just that. I'm not really concerned about it being chilly but how often does it snow that early? I'm kind of at odds with hubby & son over this-we are trying to choose between end of June/early July when weather might be better and seeing baby critters vs. late August/early September when critters will have large racks but weather may be iffy.
  • Beautiful place. Being local, I'm in the mountains multiple times a year across all seasons. It's easy to take it for granted, thanks for the grounding.
  • I don't believe I have seen whether you are driving or flying?

Flying. We no longer have an RV, I live in Mass and don't have the time to drive that far. First time out we were young and crazy, drove 7500 miles in 3 weeks, put a car out of warranty, and had a BLAST! Not sure I could handle that again unless I had at least a month. MY seat can't handle a CAR seat for that long!

Ah, very much as I remember it! I was completely awestruck then and hope I have the same feeling when we see it again. I've been to Yellowstone three times and it's never lost it's appeal.
  • I don't believe I have seen whether you are driving or flying? If you have the chance, late September through the middle of October is an excellent time to visit Waterton Lakes. If the guys like big racks, dusk is a great time to visit the Blakistan fan and see the elk rutting. We have been here for two weeks, leaving this morning, and have noticed that with the exception of this last weekend, most lodges have vacancies each night. I just made our blog (link in signature) posting last night for this stop and you may like to look at it. We were also here for the Stampede and then a week each at Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper in July and August and those posts are also available.
  • Looks like the boys have won. We are going at the end of August/beginning of September next year. It's mostly because the kids will be back in school. Don't misunderstand me, I love kids and I love watching them explore and learn about new places, but a little extra peace and quiet (hopefully!) is always nice.
  • It can snow any time. I recall an all day snowfall on July 4 at Lake
Louise & several inches well outside the mountains on an August 2. It doesn't happen often enough to make it a concern.
If you do encounter a cool period in Sept it can take longer to warm up due to the shorter days. Good weather & it can be beautiful.
  • I was in the Banff / Lake Louise area last week. There was some snow patches at the higher elevations. Heading out again this weekend to Banff. Expecting mild days and cool nights. There's a frost warning for Calgary tonight. You can get a little of everything this time of year. Be prepared!
  • We just came back from Banff, Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer and other places in that area of Alberta. We were there for the last few days of August, and first few days of September (left before Labour Day weekend to avoid the traffic) The weather was fine, a little smokey for the first few days until a front moved in and the wind and rain pretty much cleared things up. We had a good time, and you will have no problems going in September, just take a jacket for the cooler days.
