Natchez Trace

Planning on doing the Natchez Trace from Jackson Mississippi to Nashville the first week in April. Any suggestion? Camp on!
  • We are heading down the Natchez Trace next month. We would like to hit a couple of restaurants during this trip.

Specifically, the Loveless Cafe in Nashville and The General Store/Mr. D's in Lorman, MS.

Do either or both of these places have RV parking available? Pulling a 35' TT.

    Thanks.
  • I agree with the idea to stay across the river from Natchez in Vidalia LA at River view Park.

If you are interested, Plains GA is less than 20 miles from Andersonville, and home of Jimmy Carter. The old Plains High School as well as the Carter farm homeplace are now National Historic Sites. If you are coming from Alabama, you can take US280 from Columbus and stop in Plains (parking for RV is available at both sites) and see both in an easy half day. You can then drive to Andersonville and stay in the small city owned park. It is partially wooded area with hookups. Most are not very level, but there are some that are more so. No commercial amenities, but the village is an easy walk and the NPS maintained Prison and Cemetary is just a mile away across the highway. (you want to drive-- do NOT try to walk along this busy highway). Plan at least a half of day but probably a bit longer at Andersonville.
  • I am planning a trip for us to Natchez, MS, and then north on the Trace the first week of May. We also want to see the Vicksburg National Military Park since we will be close by.

I thought we could also see the Little River Canyon National Preserve in NE Alabama on the way home plus Andersonville National Historic Site in Georgia. Should make for a great loop. (We live near Ocala.)

Any other suggestions for places not to miss?

    thanks, Joyce
  • Natchez to Nashville, 450 miles. At 50 MPH enforced speed limit, it makes for a long day. take it easy, stop at the pull-offs, and enjoy. If you can start at Natchez instead of Jackson, this is an essential stop :
    Old country store, Lorman, MS

Even if you can't start at Natchez, it is just a short drive down from Jackson to Lorman. Well worth the trip in you are anywhere in the area.
  • If you can, I would start the trace at the city of Natchez which is the southern access point. We stayed at River View RV Park in Vidalia Louisiana across the river from Natchez MS. There is an information center in Natchez. Very slow pace, beautiful drive. At the far end of the trace, stay at Davis Lake Campground, New Houlka, MS milepost 243,then left 4 miles. Info on www.recreation.gov I would make reservations. $20 per night or half price if you have the pass. We drove from the southern access point to the northern end in one day. Loved it.
  • We stopped at every pull off on the trace. Lots of history. We started in Nashville and made it to Tupelo on the first day. There are several state parks along the way along with a few dry campgrounds. Lewis from Lewis and Clark was murdered along the trace and is buried in TN.
  • We could write you a book about it, but It is already written. Just search on this forum for Natchez Trace and start reading. If you have any other questions just give us a yell. Its is an easy, fun drive. A bit narrow some places, and few sholders, but stay under the posted speed and it won't be any trouble. Take your time, and visit the stops.
