Phoenix to Holbrook via highway 60?

We're going to be going east on I 40 with a detour to Phoenix in February. I'm thinking of going Highway 60 thru Show Low and up to Petrified Forest. I'd like to avoid weather problems to get back to I 40. Highway 60 appears to be scenic. Maybe Show Low up highway 77 quicker. Anyway, what is your opinion. Thanks. Mark
  • The roads are all fine for RV's. Show Low is in the White Mountains and will have snow and ski crowds. You shouldn't have any problems with passage as the roads are plowed when necessary. It's been my experience that the major weather issues are along the 40 - high winds, lots of snow. You won't know until Feb what the weather will be.
  • Hwy 60 is a good route.... just watch the weather forecast as you travel. In talking to folks living in Show Low they haven't had much snow at all in the past couple years but we all know that weather can change.

From I-40 either 77 or 377 are flat, good routes to 60 into the Show Low area. From Show Low to Payson you'll encounter some hills but gradual, not steep. From Payson down to the Phoenix valley you be driving a fairly steep, long one downhill. Get into low gear before starting downhill.... don't wait until you get going too fast down to do it. This whole route is a very popular route for RVers so there aren't any issues.

Check first for RV parks to be open once you leave I-40. You might consider spending a night near 77 and I-40 and then preparing to make the whole drive down to Phoenix in one day. There's aren't many, if any, parks open in winter.

Arrgh... :( I just re-read your post and your question was leaving Phoenix not heading to Phoenix.... so just reverse what I just said... from Phoenix to Payson you'll have a long uphill. :)
  • 60 is a decent road. A few somewhat sharp winding turns thru the salt river canyon but fine for any RV.

However, I greatly prefer 260 to 87 down to Phoenix instead of the 60. Better road in my opinion. Much of it is 4 lane especially 87 south of Payson. There is a long downhill grade heading into Payson from the north on 87. It is a good wide highway thats an easy drive.

Snow can be common along I-40, Show Low, Payson and in between. Have to watch the weather forecasts. On the bright side, roads tend to clear up quickly in AZ with 1 full day of sun following a storm.

X2 If you go 60 the odds are very high that you will get behind a VERY SLOW mover and be there for some time.
  • I live in the Mesa Az area -- When we want to travel on I40, we go to Holbrook -- We take Hwy 87 to Payson, turn right on 260,in Heber turn left on 277 -- in about 5 miles turn left on 377 -- That will take you to Holbrook -- Yo will miss all the Showlow and Snowflake area, which can get crowded -- 377 is two lane, but no climbs & very little traffic -- We`ve traveled that route countless times in our 42' coach towing a car -- BUT, check the weather before departing the Phoenix area -- It`s possible to hit snow within a short distant -- Traveling East or North, you start climbing as soon as you leave the area -- You will be around 1200 feet elevation in Mesa,& snow levels get`s down to around 4000 feet -- Beware -- Bill Willard
  • Definitely 87 to 260 for us. Its a heck of a climb up out of the Salt River Canyon into Showlow on 60. We ride that one on our Harleys so its not so bad, but I wouldn't want to run the RV over it unless I had to.

  • Have found the 377 out of Heber and the 77 out of Show Low to be good choices.
