Ricketts Glen SP

Has anyone taken the southern approach to Ricketts Glen SP (Penna.), taking Rt. 487 north from Red Rock. The park's web site advises against "heavy trailers" taking this route.

I've had no problem with other high-incline routes in PA (Black Moshannon and Blue Knob). Is the southern route to Ricketts Glen worse than those?
  • Yes, we did that last year pulling a 26ft travel trailer with a GMC Van with a 5.3 litter motor. It is a very steep hill and the van struggled and byt the time we got to the top,we were doing about 10 mph.The problem is,the alternative is about a 50 mile detour.
  • It is your call. I've towed my 17' trailer up the hill with a RAV4. No bad curves or drop offs, but is is an "interesting" hill. Here is the sign at the top:

  • Thanks to both of you. Going up sounds doable.

But going down? That 18% is beyond white-knuckle for me. I'm not in that much of a hurry and will take the long way around.
