route around oil field congestion

Staying in Medora, ND, would like to go west on 90 and take secondary roads up to Rt 2 in Montana, any suggestions? Pulling 27 ft TT
  • Having driven through ND and MT recently, it seemed almost every road that connected to another state, or at least a larger city had oil field traffic on it.

Tandem tankers doing 10-15 mph over on twisty winding US-2 through Glacier was very exciting.

US-87 through MT had a lot of farming traffic and construction with pace cars, but not much oil field stuff.

US-212 through MT into SD had a mix of farming, oil and camping traffic... US-212 seems setup for speed traps, but I didn't see any of that going on (speed limit would change from 70mph to 30mph without warning)
  • I94 to Glendive, MT; NW on 200S to Circle; then either N on 13 to Wolf Point or west on 200 to Hwy 24 then north to Glasgow. 200 and 24 are decent roads but narrow. We pulled our 27' FW through there a month ago - no problems.
  • Stay on I94 till Montana, and then head north.

US85 in western ND will put you into the heart of the congestion. Glendive MT to Wolf Pt or Glasgow should bypass most of it. You could even stay on 200 to Great Falls.

One time I stayed on I94/90 to Billings, and then took state highways NW to Great Falls.
  • Take your pick of the routes. Any oversized oil equipment will have at least one pilot car in front. Be prepared to slow down stop if necessary or to pull over as far as safety will allow in the event you come up on one.
Try to pass them on straight sections of road if possible. Pilot cars will let you know when you need to stop.
Many travel at night. Super size always travel at night or at least around here.
