TIP restrictions non owner driver

Does anyone have experience allowing someone other than the registered owner to drive an RV here in Mexico.
We would like to have a good friend move our 24' class C from Mazatlan to San Carlos for us as we have a boat we are sailing on to San Carlos. Any real world experience and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks alot
  • Thanks so much for the info we will be contacting the ADUANA tomorrow Tuesday we agree there is too much to lose.

    Thanks again
  • Check with ADUANA even if it means telephoning Mexico City. The latest rules state that the person with the name on the TIP must be in the vehicle or a member, wife, son, daughter. No one else. There is too much At stake. If the vehicle is impounded it is impossible to get it released.

I've been through too many SSP roadside checks with a cop manning a laptop connected to ADUANA to believe rumors. Letter-by-letter, number- by-number they check names, passport number, TIP, and FMM.

I'm not saying what you desire cannot be done, what I am strongly suggesting is to verify your request with ADUANA and no one else.
  • If the person is a Mexican national, and does not have a U.S. passport, they are not allowed to drive the vehicle unless one of the registered owners is present, if it is a gringo with a gringolandia license, you need to give him a letter giving him or her permission to drive it.

The letter should be notarized if possible, the more official looking the better, and preferably in Spanish.

  • Contact your insurance company first. At one time you had to be present with the driver. That may have changed.
